If you think Macau is all about extravagant entertainment or opulent dining experiences, you’re wrong. Before the end of 2018, the city is presenting a series of artsy events designed to stimulate your mind, from a pop art maze, to art exhibitions, to music and film festivals.

Keith Haring Maze Macao

The world’s first Keith Haring-themed maze has arrived in Macau. Held at Hall F, Cotai Expo of The Venetian Macao until December 31, the space features nearly 100 iconic images created by the late American pop art legend who is famous for his graffiti drawings in New York City undergrounds in the ’80s.

Near the entrance of the maze, a video documented Haring creating his murals in New York undergrounds is played in a metro-shaped booth. Inspired by the iconic heart image in Haring’s works, the maze is designed in the shape of a heart. It features multimedia experience, famous quotes from the artist, and 3D reproductions of the artist’s works.
32nd Macao International Music Festival

With “Enjoy – The Moment in Music” as the theme, this year’s music festival presents more than 20 classical and contemporary music performances by international musicians as well as local acts. The festival features acclaimed choir Stile Antico from the UK, French violinist Renaud Capuçon, classical guitar group Los Romeros from Spain, and electronic music groups Evade from Macau and FM3 from Beijing.

Running until the end of October, the festival will close with two nights of complete symphonies by Schumann by one of the world’s oldest orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, under the baton of Christian Thielemann, at Macao Cultural Centre on October 27 and 28.
Collective Exhibition of Macao Visual Arts 2018

This is where you should head to if you are keen on learning about the visual art scene in Macau today. The exhibition, taking place at Tap Seac Gallery until November 18, features 80 artworks selected from over 290 entries from 182 artists in Macau.

From paintings, to photography and cross-media creations, highlighted exhibits include The Fourth of the Wall Series by printmaking artist Lam Un-mei which won the Grand Prize of the Jury Award and the Young Artist Award in the exhibition.

Landscape of Change – Macao Watercolour Painting from MAM Collection

Travel back in time and appreciate the city’s landscapes before it turned into the Asia’s Las Vegas. Running until February 10 next year, the exhibition features more than 70 watercolour paintings by European artists such as George Chinnery and Auguste Borget and Russian architect George Vitalievich Smirnoff back in the 19th to 20th centuries. The paintings depict the coastal sceneries, buildings and streetscapes of the former fishing village.

International Film Festival & Awards • Macao (IFFAM)
Macau is celebrating the annual event from December 8 to 14. This year, the festival has appointed award-winning Hong Kong star Aaron Kwok and veteran Hollywood actor Nicholas Cage as the Talent Ambassadors. It also features an international competition – with acclaimed mainland director Chen Kaige as the jury president – comprising up to 12 feature films by first- and second-time filmmakers; and a programme showcasing non-competitive international genre films, Chinese-language movies, classic films selected by well-known directors in the world, retrospective screenings and family movies.
