The ring is extending its reach, with recent launches from Cartier to Hermès seeing the jewellery staple stretch across two, three and even four fingers.
“A double-finger ring naturally changes the way a hand looks,” says Milka Karaagacli, founder and creative director of the fine jewellery label Kismet by Milka. “It feels stronger and more defined.”
The finger-spanning style has a long history, its current trendiness notwithstanding. Multi-finger rings were worn in ancient Egypt, where they served as markers of power and protection, and in Hellenistic Greece and Rome, where they signified status.

By the late 19th century, the style had found a place in fine jewellery. As an example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a gold double-finger ring by New York jeweller Marcus & Co. Featuring two bezel-set rose-cut diamonds flanking a central rectangular cabochon-cut green gem, the piece dates to around 1895, and draws inspiration from Roman examples dating all the way back to the 4th century.

In the late 20th century, the double-finger ring resurfaced in hip-hop and punk subcultures. Bold, knuckle-duster designs from the likes of Rick Owens, Jean Paul Gaultier and Yohji Yamamoto, typically in brass or silver, followed. Hermès, meanwhile, has been producing double-finger rings for more than 20 years, courtesy of fine jewellery creative director Pierre Hardy.

“Adding double-finger rings to any collection instantly makes it feel more editorial and fashion forward,” says Ritika Atwal, founder and designer of the fine jewellery brand Ritique, which offers several double-finger designs, including the Belle Amour ring from the brand’s Éden collection, inspired by French gardens and set with rose-cut and round diamonds.
“Despite their bold appearance, our double-finger rings are actually very comfortable and easy to wear,” she says. “The design has to be thoughtfully created, keeping in mind that it cannot be overly structured, large or rigid. There needs to be flow within the design, along with open spaces that allow the piece to move naturally with the hand.”

Kismet by Milka’s designs are crafted on the same principle. “Comfort is always essential for me, no matter how bold the design is,” Karaagacli says. “With double-finger rings, proportion and balance become everything. The spacing between the fingers, the weight distribution, the flexibility of the structure – every millimetre matters. The goal is always to create a design that looks sculptural but feels easy and natural to wear.”
A chic example is the Crux ring, designed in Karaagacli’s signature Roslow (rose-yellow) gold as well as white gold, and sprinkled with teeny white diamonds. “Because it spans two fingers, [the ring] creates a much stronger line on the hand and changes the entire proportion of the silhouette,” she says. “With Crux, I wanted the design to feel sharp, confident and intentional from every angle. It has a presence that’s difficult to achieve with a classic single-band ring.”

Last year’s Cartier Trinity collection included a two-finger ring in white, rose and yellow gold, set with no less than 428 brilliant-cut diamonds and accented with black lacquer, each of the three bands representing a different animal, from reptile-patterned white gold to tiger-stripe rose gold and panther-spot yellow.

The Bee de Chaumet line plays on the house’s signature motif with a rose gold ring spanning four fingers, set with brilliant-cut diamonds. Hermès has explored the double-finger ring, meanwhile, with Chaîne d’Ancre Aléa II, which reworks the house’s anchor chain links in twisted, striped and beaded silver, while the brand’s Clou d’H double ring in rose gold set with diamonds extends the brand’s Médor pyramid stud across two fingers.

The double-finger ring has also cropped up at New York-based Marli, whose Avenues Statement ring combines asymmetrical lines with multi-cut diamonds, and at Dior, in the brand’s newest Diorissima high jewellery collection as well as the Couture Dior and My Dior fine jewellery lines.
Brazilian-Armenian designer Ara Vartanian came to the double-finger ring by studying what a conventional ring cannot do. “The double-finger ring came from an observation about the relationship between the stone and the hand,” he says. “By extending the structure across two fingers, the stone could rest more naturally, with a stronger sense of balance and proportion. It allowed the piece to feel more integrated with the body instead of simply sitting on top of it.”

That relationship with the body is what interests him most. “It opens space for tension, asymmetry and scale in a way that feels very fluid and organic,” he says. “There is a boldness to it, but also a certain sensuality in how it follows the movement of the hand.”

His most technically ambitious example is a two-finger ring at the heart of Ara x Mr Dean, his 2025 collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Swizz Beatz, whose surname gives the collection its name. First worn by Beatz and Alicia Keys at last year’s Met Gala, the collection blends the producer’s love of emeralds and rubellites with Vartanian’s sculptural aesthetic.

“When developing the design [of the two-finger ring], I became very interested in movement, particularly the balance between strength and fluidity found in horses and equestrian structures,” Vartanian says. “What I find most interesting about the piece is the tension between engineering and elegance. Even though the mechanism behind it is quite complex, the final result feels effortless and instinctive on the hand, which is always something I look for in jewellery.”
“For me, jewellery should feel alive on the body,” the designer adds. “The double-finger ring became a way to explore that idea more freely.”
