Why micro jewellery and dainty chains are the new luxury trend

From workout to dinner, micro jewellery by Chaumet, Harry Winston and Mikimoto offers quiet sophistication you never need to take off
The jewellery world is embracing a new mantra: less is luxe. Once dominated by bold, statement-making pieces, fine jewellery is increasingly gravitating towards subtle, versatile designs that enhance everyday life with ease, from miniature hoops to whisper-thin chains. This movement, often called “micro jewellery”, celebrates understated elegance and the art of layering, allowing wearers to curate a look that is personal, contemporary and endlessly adaptable.

At the heart of this movement is a notable shift in consumer preference. Jewellery is no longer reserved solely for formal occasions, explains Svetlana Hristova, head of retail at Lark & Berry in London. “Dainty jewellery has become a modern essential – the perfect expression of effortless style and quiet luxury. From delicate huggies to finely layered necklaces, these pieces bring subtle sparkle to every look, their appeal rooted in simplicity: easy to wear, simple to layer and flattering for every face shape and style … Clients are embracing this minimalist elegance more than ever.”

The appeal of micro jewellery lies in its versatility. “A few delicate pieces can effortlessly transition [you] from a relaxed daytime look to something polished for the evening, with added layers or a pendant creating a refined, personal statement that is both modern and timeless,” says Hristova. “Lightweight and comfortable, dainty jewellery is designed to live with you. It moves from morning workouts to evening dinners, offering enduring style that highlights natural beauty without ever overpowering it. Quiet, refined and endlessly versatile, it’s luxury that feels effortless while always elevated.”

Micro pieces have touched every corner of the jewellery world, from rings and earrings to necklaces, says Yaqi Xu, creative director of Vanchi Jewellery, who began sharing her pieces with clients two years ago. Since then, Xu has observed how this trend has reshaped the way women curate their entire jewellery wardrobe. “My first collection focused on chunky sterling silver rings and statement earrings – already more delicate than most on the market – but even then, clients were asking for something smaller, subtler and lighter,” she explains. “Through thousands of interactions, I’ve witnessed a shift in how women approach jewellery today.”
