From medieval embroidery to Impressionist masterpieces, the cultural calendar this autumn is packed with unmissable exhibitions. Here are eight stand-out shows to see from around the world – from the Bayeux Tapestry on display in London to the opening of George Lucas’s ambitious new museum in Los Angeles.
Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

The most high-profile museum opening of the year comes courtesy of none other than George Lucas, the legendary director behind film franchises such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Located in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which opens later this month, is housed in a 300,000-square-foot spaceship-like building designed by Ma Yansong of Chinese architects MAD, along with US-based architecture firm Stantec.
The museum’s collection, amassed by Lucas over 50 years, includes important works by the likes of Diego Rivera, Robert Capa and Gordon Parks, as well as movie posters, props and other film memorabilia.
Viktor & Rolf. Spectrum

Self-proclaimed “fashion artists” Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, the Dutch duo behind the label Viktor & Rolf, are the subjects of an exhibition at Milan’s 10 Corso Como Galleria. Displaying 20 haute couture displays looks in pairs, echoing the designers’ focus on duality in their work. Named “Viktor & Rolf. Spectrum”, the exhibition is a full immersion in the creative world of what they call their “creative marriage”. From September 25 until November 22
Night

Maurizio Cattelan, the conceptual artist behind the banana installation that went viral at Art Basel Miami in 2019, is the subject of an exhibition at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie. The show, named “Night”, features some of his most famous works, including seminal pieces such as Him (2001), Novecento (1997), La Rivoluzione Siamo Noi (2000), as well as newer commissions. One of the most influential artists working today, Cattelan has never been afraid to tackle topics such as religion and politics in his often satirical and controversial work. From September 10 to March 7, 2027
Es Devlin: Other Worlds

British artist and designer Es Devlin is the subject of an exhibition at London’s Design Museum. “Es Devlin: Other Worlds” explores her work across disciplines ranging from sculpture to stage design and even music. Devlin began her career working in theatre more than three decades ago and has since developed a remarkable body of work that defies easy categorisation, just one reason to check out the show. From October 2 to April 4, 2027
Herzog & de Meuron: In Focus

Architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron – founders of the firm Herzog & de Meuron, established in Switzerland in 1978 – are behind some of the most striking buildings in the world, from the National Stadium in Beijing to Prada’s Epicenter Tokyo in Aoyama. Hong Kong’s M+, also designed by the duo, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with an exhibition, “Herzog & de Meuron: In Focus” showcasing their projects in China that include the Tai Kwun complex in Central – through models, drawings and other objects. From September 12 to January 2027
Bayeux Tapestry

Depicting the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, the Bayeux Tapestry is considered one of the wonders of medieval art. Measuring more than 70 metres long, the monumental embroidery is part of the permanent collection of the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Normandy. While the museum is closed for renovation until next year, the work will be on display at London’s British Museum, one of the city’s most visited cultural institutions. From September 10 to July 11, 2027
Geoffrey Bawa: Architecture for the Senses

Exhibits including drawings and artworks, models, furniture, historic footage and photographs are part of an exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum in Germany showcasing Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa’s remarkable work. Although he trained in the West and was influenced by Western modernism, Bawa created his own style, informed by his Sri Lankan roots, later known as Tropical Modernism. Titled “Geoffrey Bawa: Architecture for the Senses”, the exhibition also sheds light on Bawa’s close connections with Sri Lankan artists and craftspeople. From September 26 to February 28, 2027
Monet, Peindre le Temps

To mark the centenary of Claude Monet’s death, the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris are organising a series of exhibitions and events dedicated to the artist. Opening at the Musée de l’Orangerie this month, “Monet, Peindre le Temps” (Monet, Painting Time) explores the painter’s way of depicting the passing of the hours and seasons. Besides the suggestive paintings of the celebrated Impressionist master, the exhibition also features an immersive VR experience showcasing his famous Water Lilies. From September 30 to January 25, 2027
