March brings a full slate of art openings for enthusiasts across the globe, from New York to Hong Kong. Highlights include Carol Bove’s sculptural works at the Guggenheim, Catherine Opie’s three-decade survey at London’s National Portrait Gallery, and the 82nd Whitney Biennial spotlighting contemporary voices from around the world.
In Asia and Europe, notable shows include Lee Bul’s retrospective at M+, the Palace Museum’s “Heavenly Horses” in Hong Kong, Inez and Vinoodh’s 40-year photography retrospective in The Hague, the Antwerp Six at MoMu, and The Met’s ambitious “Raphael: Sublime Poetry”.
Carol Bove – Guggenheim Museum, New York

The striking rotunda of New York’s Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is the backdrop for an exhibition dedicated to American artist Carol Bove. The wide-ranging show features early drawings and more recent work, including her signature “collage sculptures” made of scrap metal and steel tubes. From March 5 to August 2
Catherine Opie – National Portrait Gallery, London

Almost 80 photos by American photographer Catherine Opie take centre stage at the National Portrait Gallery in London. “Catherine Opie: To Be Seen” spans three decades of her career, highlighting portraits of the queer community in Los Angeles, abstract landscapes and works inspired by art history. From March 5 to May 31
Whitney Biennial – Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

The 82nd edition of the Whitney Biennial, the New York museum’s key exhibition, showcases the work of 56 artists, duos and collectives hailing from the United States and countries such as Afghanistan, Chile, Iraq, Japan and Vietnam. Co-organised by two Whitney curators, Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer, the Biennial is the longest-running survey of American art. Until August 23
Lee Bul – M+, Hong Kong

The impact of technology and humanity’s pursuit of progress are some of the themes at the heart of the work of South Korean artist Lee Bul, who last year was the subject of a blockbuster exhibition at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul. Titled “Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now”, the retrospective travels to M+ in Hong Kong just in time for Art Basel. From March 14 to August 9
Heavenly Horses – Hong Kong Palace Museum, Hong Kong

Hong Kong Palace Museum celebrates the Year of the Horse with “Heavenly Horses: Masterpieces from the Palace Museum”, an exhibition showcasing nearly 100 horse-themed paintings by more than 60 artists from the Yuan dynasty up to the 20th century. The artworks come mainly from the Palace Museum in Beijing, as well as institutions such as the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. From March 20 to March 17, 2027
Inez and Vinoodh – Kunstmuseum Den Haag, The Hague

Since the early 90s, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin have created some of the most arresting images in fashion publishing. Held at Kunstmuseum Den Haag in The Hague, Netherlands the exhibition “Can Love be a Photograph. 40 Years of Inez and Vinoodh” displays photos from many of their magazine editorials, campaigns for luxury brands and music videos for artists such as Lady Gaga. From March 21 to September 6
The Antwerp Six – MoMu, Antwerp

Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene and Marina Yee – the Belgian designers known as the Antwerp Six – are the subjects of an exhibition at MoMu, Antwerp’s fashion museum. They first presented their work, famously on their own terms, in London in 1986 and later became fixtures at Paris Fashion Week. From March 28 to January 17, 2027
Raphael – MoMa, New York

More than seven years in the making, “Raphael: Sublime Poetry” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is one of the most anticipated exhibitions of the year. A peer to Leonardo and Michelangelo, Raphael was a key figure of the Renaissance period. The exhibition brings together more than 200 of his creations, ranging from drawings to paintings and tapestries, on loan from museums around the world. From March 29 to June 28
