Hong Kong’s leading restaurants and bars look to art for inspiration this month, their creative juices stirred by Art Basel – leading to creative menus, cocktails and culinary events.

Amelia Hong Kong

In collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Board and Art Basel Hong Kong, Amelia by Paulo Airaudo is presenting a curated five-course menu that takes inspiration from renowned artworks.
The connection with each artwork is clear. For example, the first course, Formaldehyde, consists of an ayu fish encased in a dashi and bagna cauda gel, and represents Damien Hirst’s artwork, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, which features a tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde.

Other dishes on the menu include Campbell Soup, a mushroom soup made with mushroom varieties and a fondant egg inspired by Andy Warhol’s famous Campbell’s Soup Cans. The soup is poured table-side from a Campbell’s-style soup can with “Amelia” on the label.
Also on the menu is Rising Sun, a dish referencing Japanese Bamboo, a work by an unknown artist, a deer dish called Galloping Horse representing Chinese Horse Painting by Xu Baihong, and for dessert a dulce de leche named after the work Comedian by Maurizio Cattelans.

For a complete sensory experience, the menu has a QR code that leads to selected music tracks for each dish. The creative culinary art menu is available throughout May and costs HK$2,021 (US$260) per table of two. Note that due to the complexity of the dishes, reservations need to be made two days in advance.
MO Bar

MO Bar at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental is offering an Art Aperitivo set, consisting of four art-inspired cocktails or a bottle of R&L Legras Brut Champagne, together with savoury bites cleverly presented on a palette.
The cocktails represent and are named after various international artworks, street art and artistic techniques.
For example, Plumeria, which consists of tequila blanco, cacao liqueur, raspberries and a lemon- and vanilla-scented feather, represents the Mexican feather-work technique “plumeria”.

The Kiss is named after the painting of the same name by Gustav Klimt and features Tanqueray gin, Cointreau, maraschino, lemon and gold-sprayed icing sugar.
The colourful palette of bites includes a charcuterie selection, lobster filo tart, mini Impossible burgers, organic crudités and KFC – Kay’s Fried Chicken (Kay Ng is the bar’s chef), which comes with a brush to “paint” the chicken with the sauce.
The set is available every day during May from 3pm, and is priced at HK$712 for the four cocktails option and HK$999 for the champagne option.
Mirage Bar & Restaurant

Mirage Bar & Restaurant at Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel is offering an Explore Art of Flavours promotion that includes two cocktails and four snacks.
Each cocktail takes creative inspiration from Vincent van Gogh, and includes Yellow Blossoms, a nod to the artist’s many flower paintings, and features camomile honey cordial with Prosecco, garnished with a sprig of flowers.
The snacks include chicken and Manchego croquettes, and asparagus toast. Available throughout May, items can be bought individually or as a combo offer for HK$288 (two cocktails and one snack).

Woobar

Woobar (W Hong Kong) is presenting a Wine-derlust evening on May 21, with unlimited French red, white, rosé and sparkling wine, as well as products from France, including cheese, sausages, pâté, cold cuts and condiments, plus free-flow VCP champagne and pass-around desserts.
Each guest will be gifted a decorative plate designed by the artist Insane51 (Stathis Tsavalias), part of an art initiative by Marriott Bonvoy in collaboration with The Plated Project. The evening is priced at HK$698 per person, and runs from 6.30pm until 9pm.
