If there was ever a year when we should treat ourselves to a sumptuous festive feast, it is 2020. Hong Kong restaurants are offering an array of indulgent options to celebrate Christmas, and whether you prefer British, Italian, French, Japanese, Indian or Chinese cuisine, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
How chefs see the future for fine dining in a post-pandemic world
Alibi

Christmas dinner at Cordis, Hong Kong’s Alibi restaurant on December 24 and 25 features a festive buffet with multiple food stations including a seafood station packed with snow crab legs, Pacific oysters and scallops. Poached prawns and half lobsters will be served at your table. Other stations will serve cheese, cold meats, bread, soup including lobster bisque and assorted salads. Hot food choices include New Zealand lamb, seafood paella, maple-glazed gammon ham and Atlantic salmon. Roast turkey with stuffing is available at the carving station, which will also serve slow-roasted rib-eye beef. Don’t miss the foie gras with brioche and xérès raisin sauce. Pierre Gagnaire – is sustainability compatible with fine dining?
Why not celebrate early on Christmas Day at Amber with a four-course dinner menu that includes scampi with polenta and black garlic, shaved white truffles or wild venison. Dessert includes dark chocolate with chestnuts, black currants and rum. Later in the evening, there is an eight-course menu that includes bone marrow with sweet peas, shallots and black winter truffles, and aka amadai with celeriac, wakame, dulse and yuzu. Which Hong Kong eatery serves a dish inspired by Bruce Lee’s yellow jumpsuit?
Enjoy your Christmas Eve or Christmas Day dinner with a sumptuous buffet and spectacular harbour views at BLT Steak. Enjoy traditional Indian cuisine this Christmas with a five-course menu that includes choices such as marinated prawns in garlic and spices, shredded chicken wrap with egg, chilli peppers and nuts with tomato garlic chutney and lamb meatballs for starters. Main courses include Quinlan fish curry, degi murgh korma (a slow-cooked chicken with cashew paste), bhuna gosht (lamb with spices) and chatpati bhindi (okra tossed with onions, tomato and ginger). Mains include a choice of milk-fed veal Wellington with a mushroom and truffle filling and slow-roasted turkey with chestnut stuffing. Dessert includes a choice of traditional Christmas pudding with cognac sauce and vanilla ice cream or a Christmas tree of mint ganache with dark chocolate sponge and vanilla ice cream. Feather & Bone
Celebrate the holiday season with a three-course menu, available at all Feather & Bone restaurants. Starters include house-made smoked brisket pastrami, fig, guanciale and spinach with ricotta, pecan praline and pomegranate salad and a salumi and prosciutto selection. Mains feature a traditional roast turkey roulade with cranberry sauce, fig and cinnamon stuffing and Brussels sprouts. Enjoy Christmas pudding with eggnog custard or a cheese selection for dessert. Gaddi’s

Spoil yourself at Gaddi’s, one of Hong Kong’s oldest fine dining restaurants where ambience and service are just as important as the food. A seven-course tasting menu of modern French cuisine is available on Christmas and Boxing Days, starting with Perigord foie gras terrine, poached pears, Jamaican pepper and cocoa. Brittany scallop carpaccio with Kristal caviar, smoked Noilly Prat sauce and grenobloise are followed by mains of black cod fillet and Rhug Estate venison from Wales. For something sweet, the reindeer – a chocolate tube with caramelised banana, white coffee cream and dark cocoa sponge – is the perfect end to an indulgent meal. HK$2,188 per person.

Ring in the festive season Italian-style at Gradini at The Pottinger Hong Kong where executive chef Cano Chan has created a five-course celebratory dinner for December 24 and 25. The meal includes Mediterranean seafood salad with lobster, scallops and mussels followed by guinea fowl consommé. Next is home-made ravioli with wild mushrooms, cheese and oxtail with a choice of pan-fried Chilean white cod fillet or beef Wellington with Australian Kobe beef for mains. End the festivities on a sweet note with sabayon gratin and mixed wild berries. HK$888 per person.

Kyoto Joe
For something a little less traditional why not explore the unique Japanese fare at Kyoto Joe in Lan Kwai Fong and its special five-course menu for December 24 and 25? The menu includes Hanamitori chicken with shiso salad, spicy toro tartare, sashimi, a choice of robatayaki, grilled tempura or himi udon, and ends with crème brûlée. HK$780 per person.

Enjoy a French fine dining experience throughout December at L’Envol and choose between chef Olivier Elzer’s five- or eight-course festive menu. Highlights include Hokkaido sea urchin, fregola risotto and wasabi emulsion. For an exceptional dessert try the Comice pear with roasted walnut cream, fleur de sel sea salt, and speculoos ice cream created by L’Envol’s pastry chef Mandy Siu. For true carnivores, Meats is offering a festive dinner full of succulent juicy cuts. Feast on a five-course dinner menu on either December 24 and 25 that includes porchetta surrounded by crisp crackling with romesco sauce, roasted turkey basted in gravy with cranberry jam and roasted sirloin with a peppercorn sauce. Finish off the celebrations with a dessert of dulce de leche cheesecake with meringue. HK$490 per person.

Restaurant Petrus

Island Shangri-La’s fine dining restaurant, Petrus, has created a special eight-course dinner for Christmas Eve and a five-course dinner that includes calotte of Brandt beef or roast duck with red cabbage on December 25. On December 24, tuck into salmon and caviar on Melba toast and foie gras with truffle and brioche. Move onto lobster with Krug, ponzu and shiso, followed by red prawns, mushroom consommé and turbot with Brussels sprouts. Choose between venison or beef rossini with parsnip and jus as your main course. For dessert, try chef Uwe Opocensky’s Winter Wonderland with gingerbread and chocolate. Which popular Chinese restaurant staples are truly Chinese?
The traditional menu of Chinese favourites at Run, St Regis, is great for family gatherings and an eight-course specialities menu is also offered on December 24 and 25. Chef Hung Chi-Kwong’s warm winter dishes include Buddha Jumps Over The Wall, which includes delicacies such as abalone, sea cucumber, fish maw, conpoy and Yunan ham, and baked quail legs with honey glazed sauce – excellent dishes for the cooler months. Sabatini
The restaurant’s ambience combined with its traditional Italian flavours make it a great venue for a romantic dinner for two on Christmas Eve. Chef Claudio Favero has created a celebratory menu that includes violet prawn salad in red onion with Osetra caviar and chives, fillet of Dover sole in pinot grigio sauce with green asparagus and potato, linguine with Sicilian red prawns, datterini cherry tomato and basil and grilled Australian lamb with seasonal vegetables in red wine sauce. Satay Inn
Infuse the festive season with authentic Singaporean flavours at the Satay Inn on Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Over the holiday period the dinner menu includes signature dishes such as assorted satays, bak kut teh, Hainanese chicken and cereal butter prawns. HK$698 for two.

Shikigiku

The quintessential American condiment? Ketchup wasn’t even born in the US
On Christmas Eve, Shikigiku at The Royal Garden in Tsim Sha Shui has a six-course menu with traditional Japanese-inspired highlights such as Hokkaido Botan shrimp sashimi, Ehime-ken fatty tuna sashimi, prawn tempura, A4 Miyazaki Wagyu beef steak and more. HK$1,680 per person. Shikigiku’s IFC restaurant menu includes French goose liver and Miyazaki beef steak, Kama steamed rice with Hokkaido hairy crab and Ehime-ken shrimp tempura. HK$2,580 per person.

Enjoy a four-course meal on Christmas Day at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental’s eatery Somm and choose between two seatings: 5.30pm or 8pm. The six-course dinner features entrées of foie gras with heirloom beetroot and cherry salad or Polmard milk-fed veal tartare with Jerusalem artichokes. Mains include seared Hokkaido scallops with wakame, fennel, yuzu and champagne butter sauce or dry-aged Galician beef sirloin. Desserts include chestnut with bourbon vanilla and mikan sorbet or Amao strawberry with sudachi and Hokkaido milk vacherin. For a meat-free experience this Christmas try Soil to Soul’s Korean vegetarian temple food created by master chef Gu Jin Kwang. The eight-course menu from December 16 to 31 features Korean ginseng and chestnut soup, tofu and potato croquettes, asparagus kimchi and sweet and spicy mushroom – the restaurant’s signature dish. Mains include Korean radish dumpling, blessed tofu skin pockets stuffed with sweet potato noodles and Napa cabbage, traditional five veggie rice and bibimbap. It’s also good to note the chef focuses on sourcing ingredients locally. Lunch HK$998 per person; dinner HK$1,388 per person.

Spring Moon
For a more traditional approach, The Peninsula’s Chinese restaurant has created a six-course dinner menu until December 27. Start with a trio of appetisers including crispy crabmeat puff with minced pork, roasted foie gras with barbecue pork and eryngii mushroom and chilled lobster with kumquat and plum wine jelly, followed by double-boiled sea conch soup with chickpeas in a coconut. Other courses include stewed abalone with pork belly, preserved vegetables and rice crackers, roasted Kagoshima beef cubes with lime and sea salt and baked Japanese pearl rice with assorted seafood in a pumpkin. Theo Mistral

8 superfoods for sexier skin – without splurging on creams and masks
Chef Theo Randall has created a six-course Italian-inspired homestyle menu from December 24 to 25. Start with Theo’s antipasti table with salads, grilled vegetables, Parma ham, salumi and artisan cured meats, blue lobster and brandy cream soup. Next up is seafood: freshly shucked oysters, Boston lobsters and snow crab legs, clams, mussels, crayfish, sea whelks, tuna, swordfish carpaccio and marinated salmon. Choose between goose agnolotti pasta with porcini mushrooms and black truffle sauce or taglierini with mud crab. For mains, try the pan-roasted US tenderloin, turbot, grilled king prawns, veal loin or double-baked soufflé with artichokes, fontina cheese, spinach and cream. Indulge in northern Spanish cuisine this holiday season with a special tasting menu on December 24 to 25 at The Optimist.
