Where to enjoy a festive and fun-filled line-up of entertainment in Hong Kong this holiday season.
Two nights with Hiromi
Japanese composer and pianist Hiromi Uehara will play her eclectic original music with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for two nights under the baton of Japanese conductor Ryusuke Numajiri. Influenced by jazz, classical, rock and pop music, Hiromi, who released her latest album, “Spectrum”, in October, is regarded as one of the best jazz pianists in Japan. The two concerts will be staged at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, on December 23 and 24. Tickets at HK$480, HK$380, HK$280 and HK$220 from Urbtix.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane

Based on Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s play, the theatre production features an award-winning cast comprising veteran movie actress Deanie Ip, drama and TV actress Louisa So Yuk-wa, and actors Poon Chan-leung and Ling Man-lung. Directed by Fong Chun-kit, it portrays the traumatic relationship of an unmarried woman and her mother who live in a remote village. The 30-show production runs at the Shouson Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Centre, from December 20 to January 23. Tickets at HK$650, HK$450 and HK$250 for shows from Friday to Sunday, and at HK$600, HK$400 and HK$200 for shows from Tuesday to Thursday, from Urbtix.
Cheers! series

Presented by the Leisure and Culture Services Department, the annual series brings family entertainment from music, dance, puppetry and acrobatics, to multimedia performance and movies from overseas. Running until February, the highlights include Seriously Funny by Fair Play Crew from Poland (at Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre on December 14), Grass by Second Hand Dance from UK (at Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre from December 19-22), Pedal Punk by Cirque Mechanics from the US (at Queen Elizabeth Stadium from December 26-28), and The Snowman & The Bear by City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (at Sha Tin Town Hall on December 21). The Good Person of Szechwan
The Cantonese musical, co-produced by local theatre companies Hong Kong Repertory and Actors’ Family, is having its fourth run in the city. The award-winning production, which premiered in 2002, is directed by Victor Pang and features music composed by Leon Ko. The story follows Shen Teh, a young woman in Sichuan who struggles with good and evil. It runs at Lyric Theatre, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, from December 23 to January 3. Tickets at HK$420, HK$340, HK$250 and HK$180 (December 23-27); and HK$480, HK$380, HK$280 and HK$200 (December 29 to January 3) from HK Ticketing.
The Nutcracker
The Hong Kong Ballet once again runs the classic ballet during the holiday season. The production tells the story of how the heroic Nutcracker saves his love and the kingdom from the evil Rat King. It features graceful dance moves by award-winning Australian choreographer Terence Kohler, Tchaikovsky’s classic music performed live by Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and dazzling sets and costumes. Performances run at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, from December 19-29. Tickets at HK$1,000 (VIP), HK$680, HK$480, HK$320 and HK$180 from Urbtix.

Sleeping Beauty
The longest running community theatre group, Hong Kong Players, is staging an entertaining pantomime of the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. Elements such as singing, dancing and jokes give the story, which takes place in the land of The Seven Kingdoms, a charming twist. Eleven shows will be staged at Shouson Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Centre, from December 5-15. Tickets at HK$400 and HK$350 from Urbtix.
