Call it the Yellowstone effect, or maybe, like Bella Hadid with her cowboy ex-boyfriend, we all want to be ranch girls, but cowboy boots are everywhere.
That’s not to say the cowboy boot hasn’t always been a fashion favourite. With Western roots dating back to the 19th century, the style features small heels originally meant for stirrup support and high shafts to protect a working cowboy’s legs.

Anybody who still has an image of Sienna Miller circa 2004 in a minidress, Balenciaga City bag and cowboy boots or Princess Diana in the 90s pinned to their vision board would understand this. So too Marc Jacobs’ spring 1993 Perry Ellis show, when Naomi Campbell owned the spotlight in Doc Martens and lace-up cowboy boots were also in the mix, and any time Ralph Lauren – patron saint of an idealised kind of Americana – has used them in his collections.
In recent seasons, however, cowboy boots have appeared everywhere from Meryll Rogge’s debut collection for Marni – paired with zipped nylon midi-dresses and leather trousers – to Rabanne, where they were styled with sequins and florals. At Chloé, the dreamy boho woman wore them with tiered, floating chiffon skirts and check blazers, while at Fendi, cowboy boots were paired with leopard-print coats and white denim.

Celebrities can’t get enough of them either. Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski are often spotted in them, while Margot Robbie recently wore a pair with a black minidress to a movie premiere, and Lana Del Rey sat front row at the Ralph Lauren show in New York earlier this year in a brown pair styled with a floaty white dress.
While fashion brands like Ganni and Khaite offer their own renditions of the Western style, heritage bootmakers such as Texas-based Tecovas and Lucchese remain the go-to choices. And not just for professional cowboys: Lucchese recently collaborated with American fashion designer Lela Rose on a capsule of floral appliqué styles, while Tecovas teamed up with rising country music star Ella Langley for a collection.

For Amy Barnes, head of footwear, accessories, and lifestyle design at Australian heritage bootmaker R.M. Williams, the craft and purpose of the boots remain essential. It’s not that the brand – known for elastic-sided boots that serve as the uniform for big-city bankers and farmers alike – has changed its styles to adapt to fashion, but rather that fashion has come to the brand.
“While Western-inspired boots have enjoyed a resurgence over the past few years, for R.M. Williams this aesthetic has always been part of our story,” says Barnes. “Our heritage is deeply connected to Australia’s rural landscape, where our iconic elastic-sided boots were originally designed for horse riding and life in the outback. They were created for Australian stockmen, the local equivalent of the cowboy, and that connection has shaped our design philosophy for almost 95 years.
“More recently we’ve seen renewed interest in Western silhouettes through fashion, popular culture and the runway, from television series like Yellowstone to brands such as Khaite and Celine. It’s exciting because it allows us to revisit archive styles and celebrate a design language that has always been authentic to our brand, rather than something we’ve adopted as a trend.”

Still, fashion people want in. Erica Wright, founder of luxury sourcing platform Sourcewhere, says she is getting more requests for cowboy boots. “We’ve seen a noticeable resurgence in demand for cowboy boots over the past year,” she says. “One of the earliest signals came when Leandra Medine Cohen sourced a pair of Prada’s white distressed cowboy boots through Sourcewhere around this time last year [August 2025]. Since then, requests have steadily increased as the silhouette has re-entered the fashion conversation.”
Wright says that requests are coming in from both current and archival collections. “On the new-season side, clients often gravitate towards Prada and Khaite, both of which consistently produce strong interpretations of the cowboy boot each autumn and winter. At the same time, there’s significant interest in Phoebe Philo-era Celine styles that are no longer available at retail, particularly the 2017 cowboy boots which have remained one of our most consistently requested past season styles on Sourcewhere.”

Tiffany Hsu, chief buying and group fashion ventures officer at Mytheresa, recommends looking to fashion brands that offer a refined take on the style. “It should not feel too literal. Khaite, Isabel Marant, Paris Texas and Gabriela Hearst all approach the style in a way that feels modern, whether through a cleaner shape, beautiful leather, or a more subtle Western detail.
“For me, it’s about proportion and finishing. A good cowboy boot today should still have character, but it needs to feel versatile enough to wear beyond one specific look,” she says.

As for how to wear a pair of cowboy boots – whether or not you’re headed to a rodeo – look to the street-style set who have been pairing them with midi-length skirts, denim and biker jackets.
Hsu recommends not overdoing the references too. “The easiest way is to avoid styling them too literally,” she says. “I would not wear them with too many Western references at once. They look much more modern with something very clean, a tailored trouser, a simple dress, denim with a sharp blazer, or even a slip skirt. It’s really about contrast. The boot brings attitude, but the rest of the look should feel effortless and considered. That tension is what makes it feel elevated rather than overly styled.”

Barnes believes the beauty of cowboy boots is their versatility. “For men, they’re often styled simply with quality denim, a leather belt and a well-cut shirt, classic pieces that never date. For women, we’re seeing them paired with everything from relaxed tailoring to denim to flowing summer dresses, creating a balance between structure and softness. They’re no longer reserved for festivals or country settings; they’ve become an everyday wardrobe staple that works across seasons.”
