If you’ve ever wanted to look both booked and busy, effortlessly insouciant and a touch preppy – and definitely like a fashion person – then you really need to think about your jumpers. More specifically, how to wear them.
The most recent fashion season, brimming as ever with new ideas, has breathed new life into an old one: the art of tying a jumper around your shoulders.

Not only does it fit with the current trend for preppiness with a wink – from the peppy V-neck sweaters tied loosely around the chest at Loewe under new creative directors Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, to the pink cable knits that stole the show at Jonathan Anderson’s new Dior – but it also brings a new feeling of ease.
It’s a mood captured by Matthieu Blazy in his debut for Chanel too, where ambassador Gracie Abrams wore a black jumper nonchalantly knotted about the shoulders. It captured the very essence of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s desire for clothes that women could move in.

This is something that resonates with Charlotte Hicks, founder and creative director of womenswear label Esse Studios.
“For me, the appeal of knotting a sweater over the shoulders lies in its effortlessness. It’s a small styling gesture that shifts a look instantly – adding intentional dimension without ever feeling overconsidered. There’s a sense of nonchalance to it, almost like wearing a sculptural accessory,” she says. “It carries a quiet confidence and ease, yet remains undeniably classic. It’s a subtle way to introduce texture and warmth without overwhelming the silhouette, a kind of modern armour that still feels undone and relaxed.”

Inspiration for how to play with the look abounds off the runways too. Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, wore a black jumper draped over a white button-down to watch the LA Dodgers with husband Prince Harry (replete with matching Dodgers baseball caps) in October. Kendall Jenner is another fan of the drape rather than a knot, draping a grey knit over a pinstripe shirt to offer a fresh take on business casual.
The street style set at the most recent fashion season offered up a masterclass in how adding a jumper can add texture and easy chic. The great appeal is in the versatility. The look works as well with a leather skirt and plain white T-shirt as it does matching it in a primary colour for added zip. As Nicola Coughlan proved at the Cannes Film Festival last year, it even works with sequins. The Bridgerton star’s pink jumper knotted around her shoulders tempered her green sequinned dress for daytime wear.

The knotted and draped jumper is a trick for both men and women, as appropriate for the gentlemen in all white at Wimbledon – a knit adding depth to the white dress code – and every second dapper man at men’s trade fair Pitti Uomo.
Celebrity stylist Elliot Garnaut says the sweater trick is an easy way to refine an outfit and nod to the enduring appeal of preppy style. “It’s the simplest way to channel refined collegiate dressing without adding bulk or complication. It’s Ivy League prep at its best: functional, elegant and a subtle nod to heritage styling. It’s also totally functional as a scarf alternate, showing the versatility of a well curated wardrobe,” he says.

Garnaut says to look to celebrities such as Harry Styles, Jennifer Lawrence and eternal style favourites Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen for inspiration.
The jumper you choose matters too. “Choose knits with good composition so they drape, not bunch. My personal and current favourite are cotton sweatshirts from Venice Beach, California’s Erl or The Row. Of course you can’t look past Ralph Lauren, the original authority when it comes to preppy knitwear.”
