Fashion looks from Donald Trump’s UK state visit – from Kate Middleton to Melania Trump

The US first lady wore a Burberry trench coat on arrival, while Kate Middleton shone in the Lover’s Knot tiara, formerly owned by Princess Diana
US president Donald Trump, 79, relished the glow of a British royal spectacle on Wednesday, greeted at Windsor Castle on his state visit by King Charles, military honour guards and mounted troops before paying a private tribute at Queen Elizabeth’s tomb.
No US president, or any other world leader, has ever had the honour of a second UK state visit. The pomp and pageantry are deliberate, meant to bolster ties with Trump at a time when his America First policies are putting pressure on trade and security arrangements around the globe. For the grandeur-loving president, festivities involved 120 horses and 1,300 troops – including the largest guard of honour in living memory.
The Princess of Wales, 43, showed her support for British craftsmanship and creativity on Wednesday by wearing a couture gown by British designer Phillipa Lepley with a full-length, hand-embroidered gold Chantilly lace evening coat over a silk crepe gown.
Kate, as she is commonly known, sat beside President Trump, who described her as “so healthy, so radiant and so beautiful” during the banquet for the state visit honouring him. The princess’ coat, featuring hand-embroidered roses with couched gold cording, caught the candlelight and shimmered.
Here’s a breakdown of the looks from the historic visit.

Hats galore

The Princess of Wales and Queen Camilla, who sported a hat by Irish milliner Philip Treacy, spoke with Melania at Windsor Castle. Catherine opted for an Emilia Wickstead coat and dress, accessorising it with a hat by Jane Taylor. The first lady, meanwhile, chose a wide-brimmed topper and a Christian Dior haute couture jacket and skirt.
