Long before former Florida senator Marco Rubio lost his presidential campaign and joined Donald Trump’s cabinet as secretary of state, the now controversial figure played college football and dreamed of the NFL.

While a career in American football didn’t pan out for Rubio, his elder son and third child Anthony may come closer to making his father’s dreams come true as a running back with the University of Florida Gators.

He has three siblings

Anthony Rubio was born in Miami, Florida, to Marco and Jeanette Rubio. The couple met when Jeanette was 17 years old and Rubio was a 19-year-old university student. After eight years of dating, they married in 1998 in Coral Gables, Florida.
Aside from Anthony, Rubio and Jeanette also share daughters Amanda and Daniella, and son Dominick.
Anthony attended Belen Jesuit, an all-boys private Catholic preparatory school in Miami.
Following in his father’s footsteps

Marco Rubio played American football at South Miami Senior High School and was offered a full scholarship to play for Tarkio College in Missouri. The school was shut down due to financial issues however, spelling the end of Rubio’s athletic scholarship.
He went on to enrol at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida, and eventually found his way to politics.
His son Anthony is a freshman at the University of Florida and is a running back for the Florida Gators. The youngster made headlines when he scored his first collegiate touchdown in December last year, helping his team to victory against the Tulane Green Wave in the Gasparilla Bowl (an annual postseason college football game in the Tampa Bay area).
“It was insane. First I want to thank God for that – it wouldn’t have happened [without] him,” Anthony told a reporter after his winning touchdown. “But I’m so glad He did that. That was awesome, that was a great experience. Go Gators!”
Rubio also took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate his son, writing, “Happy my son scored. But what I am truly proud of is the joy from his teammates and that he gave all the glory to God.”
According to his bio on the Florida Gators page, Anthony rejected scholarship offers from universities such as Buffalo, Charlotte and Bryant to play for the Gators.
He’s a volunteer

The young Rubio spends his spare time as a volunteer for Alachua Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organisation based in Florida that helps “build safe and affordable homes in Alachua County”. Anthony has shared multiple photos on his X (formerly Twitter) of himself building houses with other volunteers for the NGO.
