As the flag-bearer of hardline immigration policies, global tariffs and a new era of strained international relations under Trump, Rubio has become the face of America’s uncompromising foreign policy. Yet behind the polished veneer of political power lies a family history riddled with drama.

Although not as high-profile as his brother, Mario Rubio has had his fair share of work in political circles. According to the Miami Herald, in 2019, Mario was given a high-ranking position in Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ job creation department. He was hired as the director of community development with a salary of US$115,000 per year. At the time, there were questions about his lack of qualifications. The agency’s spokesperson told the Miami Herald that Rubio was interviewed and was found to be “qualified” for the job.

Before that position, Mario spent eight years working in various positions for the City of Jacksonville, including as the Small and Emerging Business Administrator. Mario is 21 years older than Marco and was just six when his parents left Cuba for America, per the same publication.

Mario is also an Army Special Forces veteran and when campaigning for president in 2015, Marco spoke about his brother during a campaign event. Per The Washington Post, Marco said his brother experienced first-hand the lack of healthcare available for veterans. “He was hit in the mouth while in jump school, bending his front teeth back in a way that became an orthodontic nightmare,” Rubio reportedly said.

Mario also worked for Florida Department of Children and Families between 2021 and 2023, but is now a business consultant.
