Meet Canada’s new first lady, Diana Fox Carney: the respected economist and academic author comes from a privileged background, met her husband at Oxford and is firmly against rampant consumerism

Diana met her husband, new Canadian PM Mark Carney, at Oxford University, where they both played ice hockey – they now have 4 daughters and she is an economist who has spoken out against consumerism

At Carney’s side as he leads the country through one of its toughest challenges is his wife, Diana Fox Carney.

On March 9, Mark Carney turned to his family during his acceptance speech, having become Liberal Party leader and therefore premier. “Without your support, I wouldn’t be standing here. Without your examples, I wouldn’t have a purpose. Without your love I wouldn’t have the strength that I need for what lies ahead,” he said.
Here’s what you need to know about Canada’s new first lady.
She met Mark Carney at university

Per People magazine, the Carneys met when they were studying at Oxford University. They were both members of the university’s ice hockey club. According to the university, British-Canadian Diana was known for “her ability to skate rings around her opponents and move effortlessly through the opposing defensive line”. The postgraduate and future Canadian prime minister was the goaltender and joint captain of his team, which he led to victories against Cambridge University in 1993 and 1994.
