Who is Al Cárdenas, husband of The View’s Ana Navarro? He’s a lawyer and political insider, having worked for two presidential administrations – and like his wife, he’s no fan of Donald Trump

The couple used to spar as rival political commentators, but now they avoid the topic of politics in their home lives; Mitt Romney and Anderson Cooper were among their wedding guests

Political commentator and television show host Ana Navarro-Cárdenas continues to be the butt of many jokes, having cited false information in defence of US president Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, last year.

On X, Navarro claimed Woodrow Wilson, US president from 1913 to 1921, had pardoned his brother-in-law, “Hunter deButts”. After being called out for spreading false information she tried to make light of the incident, saying it had come from ChatGPT.

Navarro, 53, is a popular television personality, but her private life also makes headlines. In 2019, she married well-known politician and lobbyist Al Cárdenas. Although there’s a 24-year age gap between them, the couple’s unlikely love story won over many. Here’s what you need to know about Cárdenas, the man who captured Ana’s heart.

The pair sparred on TV

In 2008, Navarro was the Hispanic chair for John McCain’s presidential campaign, while Cárdenas was Mitt Romney’s Florida chairman, as noted by Aventura magazine. Navarro told the publication that they had “heated televised debates”, where she took aim at the man who would become her husband.

“I always took advantage of Al, because he was so chivalrous and would never throw the blows I would,” she said.

The couple, who didn’t live together at the time, have since learned how to deal with their differing politics. Cárdenas told Aventura that love has helped them be more tolerant. “Now that we live under the same roof and have been in love for a long time, I’m not going to get into a spiff with my wife over politics that’ll ruin our marriage,” he said. “We might disagree, but it’s not a huge deal.”
