Hulu’s new post-apocalyptic thriller series Paradise, a murder-mystery set in an underground utopia for the elite, burst onto our screens recently and is already one of the most-watched TV shows, according to FlixPatrol. Its success may have something to do with the stacked cast: Paradise features Sarah Shahi – of saucy Netflix drama Sex/Life – Sterling K. Brown, James Marsden and Julianne Nicholson. However, casting the last of those took some effort on the part of creator Dan Fogelman.

In an interview this month with The Hollywood Reporter, Fogelman, best known for shows including This Is Us and Only Murders in the Building, as well as movies Crazy, Stupid, Love and Cars – revealed he lied to executives at 20th Television about the show’s projected production timeline to accommodate Nicholson’s schedule.

When it looked like Nicholson would turn down the project because of other commitments, Fogelman went to great lengths to buy some extra time and accommodate her dates. “I said: ‘We’re not ready to make the show. We need more time in prep,’ which cost a lot of money to extend prep … I made it [seem] about 12 different things, but that allowed for us to delay starting shooting, and allowed Julianne to be free. Now, obviously, everyone’s so glad we did it,” he recalled.

So just who is Julianne Nicholson, who plays steely, enigmatic overseer Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond in Paradise?
