Garden State democratic governor Phil Murphy just got caught in controversy.
In a recent interview with the progressive organisation Blue Wave New Jersey, Murphy shared a story that seemed to imply he was sheltering an immigrant of ambiguous status in his home. “There’s someone in our broader universe whose immigration status is not yet at the point that they are trying to get it to and we said, ‘You know what, let’s have her live at our house above our garage,’” he recalled, per the New York Post, before throwing an open challenge to ICE authorities who might want to arrest her. “Good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her,” he said.
Not missing a beat, a representative for Murphy clarified that his comments had been “misinterpreted” and that he was simply referring to a conversation he had with his wife, Tammy Snyder Murphy, about a legal immigrant in their friend circle who was concerned amid Trump’s mass deportation operation, says AP. The spokesperson further reassured, “no one’s ever lived in the home” – that is, as a hidden illegal immigrant.

According to the official website of the state of New Jersey, Tammy Snyder Murphy hails from Virginia. Per New Jersey 101.5, her late father, Edward, was British and of Jewish faith. Her mother, Jean, was a model. They ran Checkered Flag Motor Car Company, a car showroom. “Growing up, I was certainly better off than Phil was,” Tammy said in an interview with NJ.com.
Tammy graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in English and communications. She can also speak Italian and German.
