They were high school sweethearts
At 15 in Oklahoma, Shelton met Kaynette Williams. Despite both attending the same school, it wasn’t until after Williams graduated that the two met, per The List, and the pair were friends for years before finally dating when Shelton turned 21. According to Country Thang Daily, she later became his road manager.
He proposed while they were out hunting
Instead of a romantic dinner or a grand surprise, Shelton popped the question right after a morning of hunting with pals. According to Hollywood Life, after she said yes, the pair spent the rest of the day celebrating with friends, partying, and even heading back out for more hunting. The couple tied the knot on November 17, 2003, in a private ceremony in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, while Shelton was on a break from touring with Toby Keith.
She’s a teacher now
The couple split in 2006, with Williams accusing Shelton of “inappropriate marital conduct”. “I just really don’t think I was ready to be a husband,” Shelton said, per People. Williams reportedly returned to Oklahoma after her split from Shelton, but when he and Miranda Lambert moved in nearby, she realised Oklahoma wasn’t big enough for the three of them.
