The birth of any royal baby is always cause for celebration. While many countries’ royal families honour new members through gun salutes and town criers, King Mohammed VI took things one step further upon the birth of his baby girl, Lalla Khadija, on February 28, 2007.

The princess was welcomed to the world with a 21-gun salute and extravagant presents gifted to all girls born on that same day.

Moroccans expressed their joy in public squares and parks, and signed their well wishes on golden guest books scattered throughout provinces across the country.

These celebrations were just the start of Moroccans’ love affair with Princess Lalla Khadija. Dubbed the “Princess of Hearts” by the Morocco Jewish Times, we reveal why she is one of the most adored royal teens in the world.

Princess Lalla Khadija’s birth also marked a momentous occasion for an unexpected group of people: prisoners. When the princess was born, King Mohammed VI pardoned 8,836 prisoners and reduced the sentences of 24,218 other prisoners, according to NBC.

According to the Justice Ministry of Morocco, the pardons were made on the grounds of humanitarian concerns. Among those pardoned were people with disabilities, pregnant women and the elderly.

Similar to her older brother, the Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, Princess Lalla Khadija is a student at the prestigious Royal College located within the palace in Rabat. She has proven to be a talented student, according to Morocco World News, and even performed stage plays in Arabic, French, Spanish, English, Russian and Chinese for her 2017 graduation ceremony.
She has been attending official ceremonies since she was 11, and has even chaired an inauguration ceremony

On September 17, 2018 – at the age of 11 years old – Princess Lalla Khadija accompanied her father and brother to her first official ceremony. The programme, which was led by the Minister of Education, discussed schooling and educational reforms in Morocco.

The princess has since been present at many other official ceremonies alongside her family, and she even chaired an inauguration ceremony for the vivarium of Rabat’s National Zoological Park in 2019.

She has met many world leaders and royal families

As part of her official duties, Princess Lalla Khadija has met many important world leaders and members of royalty who have visited her family in Morocco.

In 2017, Princess Lalla Khadija was photographed greeting French president Emmanuel Macron at the Royal Palace. She has also met Pope Francis when he visited Morocco in 2019, and met King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain later that year.
She travels with her family in her free time

When she’s not at school or attending to her official duties, Princess Lalla Khadija likes to travel with her family around the globe. While they’ve been spotted holidaying in New York and Paris, the family has one favourite holiday destination: Greece.

According to Morocco World News, her mother, Princess Lalla Salma, is passionate about Greece and regularly takes her children there for the holidays. They even rented a luxury yacht named Serenity in 2019, which costs about US$4 million per week.
