  • The Manchester United legend’s home boasted Manhattan skyline vistas across Central Park – a spot so epic it inspired the bachelor pad in E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey
  • Small change? In 2018, Ronaldo spent US$37,000 on two bottles of wine in a club in London, and he has also flaunted a US$2.5 million diamond-encrusted watch

That football’s first billionaire, Cristiano Ronaldo, paid US$18.5 million for a lavish apartment in Trump Tower is old news. The 37-year-old Manchester United star bought the opulent nine-bedroom flat at 721 Fifth Avenue in New York back in 2015, before Donald Trump was elected US president.

After facing a tremendous backlash from fans, in 2019 the Portuguese professional footballer listed the 2,510 sq ft abode for less than half of what he bought it for – US$9 million.

Still it wouldn’t sell. In June 2021, the price for the luxurious pad was slashed further, to only US$7.75 million.

Trump’s infamy inspired the constant urging of fans – and even a petition that close to 14,000 supporters signed – to sell the residence. They may even have pushed the striker to finally cut his loses and resign himself to getting rid of the apartment asap.

Now comes news that the star has finally sold the three-bedroom New York flat for a mere US$7.75 million.

The 3.5-bathroom unit was reportedly inspiration for Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James, who used the interiors as a model for the bachelor pad of his character, Christian Grey.
