How do royals celebrate Valentine’s Day? From Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s PDA to Prince William’s bouquet to Kate Middleton, plus other couples around the world
- Sweden’s Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill shared a pic of their children, Nicolas and Leonore, while Jordan’s King Abdullah and Queen Rania posed with a lavish rose-topped cake
- Holland’s King Willem-Alexander recreated his proposal to Queen Maxima, while Spain’s Queen Letizia re-wore the Armani suit she donned for her engagement to King Felipe VI
Thanks to the rise of social media, however, these blue bloods have given us a glimpse of how they spend this special day. To no one’s surprise, their take on this love-filled occasion is straight out of a fairy tale.
1. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Active royals or not, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have never been shy about putting on public displays of affection. For Valentine’s Day 2020, Harry and Meghan wore big smiles at Victoria International Airport in Canada after a quick trip to the US.
Before tying the knot with the heartthrob prince in 2018, Markle offered some advice to her fellow “singletons” on her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig. “Be your own beautiful, darling, cherished and funny Valentine. You deserve it,” the actress-turned-duchess wrote.
2. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima
The Netherlands’ monarchs took a trip down memory lane on February 14, 2021. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima marked the special occasion by recreating his proposal to his wife on a frozen pond at Huis Ten Bosch Palace in The Hague.
King Willem-Alexander recounted his 2001 proposal to Queen Maxima to RTL Nieuws. “It was a beautiful Friday afternoon and I thought, ‘Máxima will have to learn how to skate, because what is more Dutch than ice skating?’”
