This year has definitely been a dumpster fire for C-biz with the government’s crackdown on the entertainment industry and the cancellation of numerous A-listers.
And amid the chaos, star couples breaking up or even filing for divorce stirred things up even more.
Here are four of the most shocking Chinese celebrity divorces in 2021.
Barbie Hsu and Wang Xiaofei

Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, best known for portraying the strong-willed and courageous Dong Shancai in the hit romcom television series Meteor Garden in 2001, got married to businessman Wang Xiaofei, heir to the Chinese South Beauty restaurant group, after only four dates over 49 days. Right after their engagement announcement, the couple received a storm of criticism from netizens concerned about Hsu’s overly hasty decision to marry, reported china.org.cn.

The couple stood firmly beside each other despite this and, once they had two children on top of that, Hsu’s fans hoped for a happily-ever-after. However, the couple officially confirmed their divorce in early November after a decade of marriage. They are now discussing the division of their US$32 million of assets and custody of their children.

Zhao Liying and Feng Shaofeng

Zhao Liying and Feng Shaofeng met and fell in love while working together on projects such as the fantasy movie The Monkey King 3 and the Chinese historical television series The Story of Minglan. They thrilled their fans when they showed off their marriage certificates on their personal Weibo accounts in 2018, confirming that they’d tied the knot after about one year of dating. Not long after, Zhao gave birth to a son.

However, their marriage was tainted by rumours about Feng having an affair and his mother’s insensitive interference with their relationship. In April 2021, after less than three years of marriage, the couple shocked C-biz by confirming their divorce, stating that they separated on good terms.

Tong Liya and Chen Sicheng

The powerful celebrity couple – actors Tong Liya and Chen Sicheng – dropped the bombshell news of their divorce in May, ironically on the day netizens view as one of China’s several Valentine’s Day equivalents. The couple met on the set of the Chinese television series Beijing Love Story in 2010, tied the knot in 2014, and welcomed a son in 2016.

As Chen Sicheng had been accused of cheating on his wife several times even during her pregnancy, many of her fans actually congratulated her on her divorce decision, saying that she should have split from him even sooner.

Liang Jie and Purba Rgyal

Actress Liang Jie rose to prominence after her role in the much-loved television series The Eternal Love. She and fellow actor Purba Rgyal made their relationship public in 2017, and Rgyal proposed in 2018.
