Being born royal doesn’t necessarily mean a life spent wafting around palaces and banqueting with dignitaries; many of the world’s royals in fact have regular jobs, or have had periods in their lives where they have worked full-time. In fact many of Queen Elizabeth’s grandchildren have or are still working nine to five.

Peter Phillips
Queen Elizabeth’s eldest grandchild, Peter Phillips – yes, the one who walked between his cousins William and Harry during their grandfather Prince Philip’s recent funeral – began his career in motorsports, a passion of his, when he landed a job working for Jaguar as corporate hospitality manager. He later worked with the Williams Racing Formula One team as a sponsorships account manager, and even worked in Hong Kong for a few years from 2008 for the Royal Bank of Scotland. 
Meghan Markle’s beauty evolution

Most recently he has been working for SEL UK, a boutique sports management company. But is he also in need of a few bob? Last January, right before the pandemic struck, Phillips could be found on mainland Chinese television promoting milk as a “British royal family member”. Fun fact – he does not in fact have a royal title because his parents, Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, wanted their children to lead normal lives.

Prince Harry
After finishing school, Prince Harry joined the military as Officer Cadet Wales, and went on to serve in the army for a full 10 years, completing two tours of Afghanistan before leaving service in 2015. Once out of the military, he turned toward his duties as a senior royal family member. However after marrying Meghan Markle, the couple famously stepped away from their royal duties, and now dabble in television and podcast production in Los Angeles, among other things.

Prince William
Harry’s brother and second in line to the throne, Prince William also trained in the military – first with the Royal Air Force and then with the navy (even getting to take part in a US$55.4 million drug bust in the Atlantic). By 2010 he was a fully qualified helicopter pilot. 
In 2014 he joined the East Anglian Air Ambulance as a search and rescue pilot, working shifts and dealing with critical care cases. After marrying Kate Middleton in a fairytale wedding in 2011, the pair lived in a modest cottage in Anglesey (off the coast of Wales) where he worked as an RAF helicopter rescue pilot. It wasn’t until 2017 that the couple began taking on full-time royal duties.

Princess Beatrice
Prince William and Harry’s cousin, Princess Beatrice, the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, has in fact worked in a whole range of ordinary roles. During the summer of 2008, she was a sales assistant at famous London department store Selfridges, worked in the Foreign Office as a press officer, and even worked as an extra on the film The Young Victoria. 
For a short while she became a paid intern at Sony Pictures before moving to New York. She is now vice president of partnerships and strategy at American software company Afiniti, where she also oversees a programme to engage senior business leaders around the world to support women in leadership roles.


Princess Eugenie
With a passion for art, Beatrice’s younger sister Princess Eugenie also moved to New York in 2013 to work for online auction house Paddle8 in the role of benefit auctions manager. In 2015 she moved back to London to work for art gallery Hauser & Wirth as associate director, getting promoted to director in 2017.

Zara Tindall
Daughter of Princess Anne, Zara Tindall is an equestrian and Olympian who has won numerous events in her field, including a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and the Eventing World Championship in Aachen in 2006. 
In 2010 she launched her own range of equestrian clothing for the brand Musto, named ZP176 – named after the team number she was given the first time she represented the UK in an equestrian event. She currently works as the director at Cheltenham Racecourse helping to promote Britain’s equestrian Olympic team ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

David Armstrong-Jones
Queen Elizabeth’s nephew David Armstrong- Jones, aka the second Earl of Snowdon and the former Viscount Linley, is perhaps best known for being a bespoke furniture maker and known in the trade as David Linley. At one point he also owned his own high end furniture and interior design business called Linley, but he sold the company in 2012. In 2006 Armstrong- Jones became chairman of Christie’s UK and now serves only as honorary chairman for Christie’s Europe, the Middle East, Russia and India – all under the name David Snowdon.
