K-pop supergroup BTS is not only known for chart-topping hits, but also for its long-time involvement in charitable causes, with members making generous donations since close to the start of their careers.

BTS’ official fan group, the Army, has taken cues from their idols and made their own donations in the band’ name, too, often raising massive amounts of money in short periods of time. Here are five ways the BTS Army has showed its compassion over the years.

When Typhoon Ulysses – known internationally as Vamco – recently hit the Philippines, BTS fans all over the country banded together to raise funds to help heavily affected communities. Over 100 regional, provincial and city fanbases united to raise over 4 million pesos (US$83,000).

For Jungkook’s 21st birthday, BTS fans in Peru adopted a pygmy rabbit in his name, as they wanted to raise awareness about the negative impact of human activities on the endangered animal’s habitat. They also adopted an alpaca and named it RJ – just like Jin’s BT21 character.
Meanwhile in South Korea the Army donated to the WWF and adopted a beluga whale, two blue whales, a humpback whale and a narwhal for leader RM’s birthday.

Donating rice

Kmedia reported on the heartwarming news of BTS Jimin fans donating 709kg of rice under his name for children affected by the spread of Covid-19.

Over the years, the Army has been known to donate rice to communities in the name of BTS. In 2019, Korean BTS fans donated 128 sacks of rice to J-Hope’s hometown in Gwangju as well as 700kg of feed to various animal rights groups across South Korea. This July, Jimin’s fans donated 709kg of rice to Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services to help those affected by Covid-19.
The Philippine Army also donated 100kg of rice in honour of BTS’ Wings Tour Final Concert.

When BTS donated US$1 million to the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, fans matched the donation through a campaign on Twitter with the hashtag #MatchAMillion. In just 24 hours, Army surpassed their target and even got personalities like WWE superstar John Cena to join in.

In 2017, Toronto’s Army launched charity exhibition “Wings Chronicles” that presented photography and other visual art promoting BTS’ albums “Wings” and “You Never Walk Alone”. The proceeds were donated to charity under BTS’ name.
On a separate occasion, Malaysian Army hosted an exhibition and donated the profits to the National Council for the Blind, Mercy Malaysia and the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia.
