Nayantara Kothari is the niece of internationally famous Indian business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest man. She grew up in the lap of luxury because her mother, Nina, married into one of India’s wealthiest families but just who is she? Read on to get to know more about this intriguing young woman.
She was Dhirubhai Ambani’s first grandchild, and the first to marry
Nayantara Kothari is late Indian business magnate Dhirubhai Ambani’s first grandchild, the daughter of Dhirubhai’s daughter Nina. Nayantara was also the first grandchild to get married. In 2013, she wed Shamit Bhartia, a director in the Hindustan Times Group who manages the media and lifestyle departments.

She married out of love
Most marriages in India are still arranged by the parents of the bride and groom. This is especially true in upper-class circles. However, Nayantara and Shamit didn’t wait on their parents to help them find each other. The two were friends for years before they decided to become a couple. Both sets of parents gave their blessing to the wedding, which is not surprising as Shamit, like Nayantara, comes from a wealthy family.
She’s close to her extended family
Nayantara is close to her Ambani cousins, uncles and grandmother Kokilaben Ambani. When she got married, her uncles hosted pre-wedding events on their properties and ensured that Bollywood’s best-known stars all came out for the occasion.

She is a fan of Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan

A look at Nayantara’s Instagram photos makes it clear that she has another heartthrob besides her husband: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. She is photographed with him multiple times at her pre-wedding bash and at least one photo denotes that she views him as the “Tom Cruise of India”.
She keeps much of her life private
After her father passed away in 2015, Nayantara’s mother and younger brother took over the management of their father’s company, Kothari Sugars and Chemicals. However, it doesn’t appear that Nayantara has any role in the family business. She studied at Stanford University in the United States but it’s not known what her major was or what type of work she is doing today.

There is a possibility that Nayantara may be helping her husband in his work at Hindustan Times, but it seems most likely that she’s focusing on family life rather than job responsibilities. News outlets reported in 2017 that Nayantara’s grandmother Kokilaben Ambani held a lavish baby shower in Nayantara’s honour, implying that there is a great-grandchild in the family, but Nayantara (like her mother) is a private person and not much is known about her child.

While the Ambani clan consists of many movers and shakers, it seems that Nayantara is content in her role as a homemaker for now. Certainly her family doesn’t need the extra income. Even so, Nayantara is still quite young, and it’s very possible that, like her brother and many of her cousins, she may enter the business world at some point.
