Forget demure femme fatale, these K-sisters are doing it for themselves in new tough roles both on and off the screen

Many of us grew up watching female leads that were demure and innocent. Fortunately, times are changing and more dramas feature storylines with strong-willed and independent women.

In recent years, we’ve seen numerous fictional female characters with a tough persona. But are there actresses with a tough image in real-life too? Here are some Korean actresses defying social norms with their “strong woman” persona.

1. Lee Da-hee

Lee Da-hee is famous for having a fiery personality in The Beauty Inside and Search: WWW.

Although when she started her career, she thought that her strong and confident personality would lead to her downfall. After all, millennials like her grew up watching innocent and obedient heroines.

She explained to Soompi, “I feel like I’m now being recognised for many aspects of myself that I used to consider handicaps. Because of that, I’m also working hard to do my part.”

2. Park Shin-hye

Park Shin-hye fighting gangsters in The Doctors is one of the most epic fight scenes we’ve seen to date. Her stunts may be attributed to her daily workouts and Pilates classes.

Her friend, songwriter Songki, is even intimidated by her personality in real-life. He told Allkpop, “You don't want to mess with Park Shin-hye because of her aura. She has a very strong energy.”

3. Kim Hye-soo
