Irrfan Khan was already famous throughout his native India when he was asked to play the role of a police officer in Slumdog Millionaire. Even so, the role took him to new heights as international audiences discovered what Bollywood film-goers already knew: Khan was no ordinary actor. The movie won multiple Academy Awards, and director Danny Boyle recently credited Khan for playing a “pivotal role” in the film’s amazing success.

Pundits point out that there is a strange beauty in hearing Khan speaking English. Even so, there is one outstanding scene in Life of Pi that is about more than his amazing vocal ability. In the movie, he talks about his late father, telling his interviewer that while the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, what hurts most is not taking a moment to say goodbye. It’s a sentiment that is sure to resonate with fans the world over who struggle to deal with the incredible loss of life the Covid-19 pandemic has brought about.

His decision to remain in India

Khan could have easily moved to Hollywood. His international fame would have made it easy for him to fit in with internationally acclaimed actors, directors and other celebrities. Instead, he shunned the opportunity, memorably revealing to the Hindustan Times that he never really felt like leaving his home country because his people and stories were in India and he was happy to be part of “this brave, new world”.
His cancer revelation

“Life has no obligation to give us what we expect,” Khan said, quoting Gone with the Wind novelist Margaret Mitchell’s words even as he bravely revealed to fans and friends alike, in 2018, that he was battling a rare form of cancer. His heroic yet down-to-earth manner as he told the world about his diagnosis was every bit as memorable as the many heroic roles he played in iconic films over the last 30 years.

Reports state that the actor’s final words were “Amma (mother) has come to take me”. Irrfan’s mother died just a few days before her beloved son left us, aged 53, and Khan was unable to say a final goodbye in person due to the coronavirus lockdown.
While Khan’s death is certainly tragic, fans can at least take comfort in the fact that he no longer suffers the pain and exhaustion he experienced when battling neuroendocrine cancer. What’s more, the dozens of movies and shows he starred in make it possible for the world to continue to enjoy his vibrancy.
