Skincare in your 30s: a new routine for acne, fine lines and sensitivity
STORYCarolina Malis

Introduce retinol gradually, try vitamin C serums like SkinCeuticals’ C E Ferulic, and wear SPF daily – while prioritising barrier care
At some point in your 30s, your skin stops playing by the rules you’d come to rely on. The routine that worked fine at 26 starts feeling like it’s missing something. A breakout appears on your chin the week before your period; you catch a fine line under harsh bathroom light that definitely wasn’t there last summer; your cleanser, the same one you’ve used for years, suddenly leaves your face feeling stripped. It’s not a dramatic change, but more of a quiet, slightly confusing recalibration that nobody really warned you about.
“As we move through our 30s, oestrogen and progesterone naturally begin to fluctuate while our androgen levels often remain relatively stable,” says Marlee Bruno, a physician associate at Mind Body & Soul Medical. “That creates what we call relative androgen dominance – in simple terms, the hormones responsible for oil production suddenly have more influence.” At the same time, cell turnover slows: Bruno notes that research suggests it drops by roughly 20 per cent across this decade, which means oil, debris and dead skin cells don’t clear the pores as efficiently as they once did, leading to dullness that takes longer to shift, a loss of firmness that reads as tiredness even when you’re not tired, and breakouts that tend to cluster along the jawline and chin.
