Like most of us, plenty of celebrities have tried to find love on dating apps – but unlike us, many of them are accused of catfishing, though some have been catfished themselves

Celebs – they’re just like us! You’d think that the rich and famous would have no shortage of dating options, but some stars looking for love end up turning to dating apps such as Tinder, Hinge and Grindr.

Dating is already hard, but when you’re famous it can be even more challenging, as these celebrities found out. For years, online romance fraudsters have impersonated celebrities and targeted fans with dating scams. They typically look for fans online, then forge a relationship through a profile that uses a celebrity’s photos. Once they’ve duped their unsuspecting victim into thinking they’re speaking with their idol they start asking for money.

With so many of these catfish around, it’s no surprise that when real celebrities do join dating apps, often things don’t quite go to plan. Many app users assume that a profile purporting to be that of a celebrity is fake and simply ignore it. But who are some of the famous faces who have joined dating apps in their quest for love?

Drew Barrymore has been open about her dating life since her 2016 split from Will Kopelman, with whom she shares two daughters. The 49-year-old actress and talk show host recently told her viewers she was the target of a catfish who faked his identity. “This guy on my dating app said he was the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams … he was not the quarterback for the LA Rams. He’s a musician that thought he was being cute,” she said in an edition of The Drew Barrymore Show. Barrymore said she found the process of online dating draining. “Every time I get on there it does not feel great. I always last five days,” she told viewers.

Following his separation from model Gigi Hadid, singer Zayn Malik revealed he joined Tinder to get back into the dating game. Sadly for 31-year-old Malik, users assumed he was a scammer. “Everyone accused me of catfishing. They’re like, ‘What are you using Zayn Malik’s pictures for?’ I’ve been kicked off once or twice,” he told Nylon. The former One Direction singer also told the magazine he’s no longer using Tinder and isn’t currently looking for love. “I’m really content and happy with being single for the first time in my life,” he said.

Andy Cohen admits he prefers dating regular people on apps – the problem is he keeps being ejected for catfishing. The 56-year-old Bravo host once revealed on The Ellen Show, “There is a gay dating app that I’m on that I keep getting kicked off, because they think I’m impersonating Andy Cohen. They’re like, ‘Your photos don’t meet our guidelines,’ and I’m like, ‘It is me!’”
