Why you can trust SCMP
Who started it? Australian Boyd Lane founded the accessories brand in Sydney in 1938. In the 1950s, Oroton started making compacts out of metallic mesh, which until then was only used as a utilitarian material. A range of gold and silver mesh handbags followed in the 60s and 70s, and became must-have accessories for disco girls and socialites. Already a household name Down Under, Oroton was crowned best Australian fashion brand by Marie Claire last year. The brand has expanded into apparel, jewellery, lingerie, beauty, shoes, sunglasses and men’s accessories, and recently opened boutiques in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Why we love it: Oroton takes a relaxed, modern approach to luxury, which reflects its Antipodean heritage. The brand has become synonymous with a casual glamour that is reminiscent of Coach but with a more beachy vibe.

What we’d pick: the silver Opera gather clutch in Oroton’s signature mesh (bottom; HK$1,715) looks vintage yet futuristic. In a new shape this season, the bag is striking in its simplicity and comes with a detachable snake chain shoulder strap. The softly structured 1938 medium barrel bag in black (right; HK$3,465) or a limited-edition brown New Zealand deerskin (above right; HK$6,265) is the ideal size for an everyday carry-all. Made in Italy and 100 per cent silk, the Aloe silk scarf (top; HK$1,015) features this season’s leafy print and is the perfect summer accessory.

Where can you find it? Oroton is in Empire Court, 2 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, tel: 2866 6580; www.oroton.com.
