Mainland Chinese singer Li Ronghao used social media on Thursday – his 34th birthday – to announce his engagement to his girlfriend, Rainie Yang, the Taiwanese singer and actress.

The news on Weibo, the Chinese microblogging website, gained 1.5 million likes and 1.4 million comments within five hours of it being posted.

Li wrote: “Today is my 34th birthday. It’s also the anniversary of my wedding proposal. Thank you for saying yes.”

After four years of dating, Li made the official announcement on Thursday morning after Yang had posted a celebratory photograph to mark his 34th birthday at midnight saying: “Today is the birthday of this man. Happy birthday.”

Rumours of a possible wedding between the stars started to circulate after Yang indirectly referred to herself as Li’s wife on a Chinese reality show Idol Producer in May last year.
