On July 7, 2016, a new K-pop group arrived on the scene with the brash single Fire Truck ahead of their first self-titled mini-album, NCT #127, released on July 10.
Five years later, NCT 127 are going stronger than ever and celebrated their anniversary with a special fan meet and news of their upcoming third studio album.
Throughout that time, they’ve shown a chameleon-like flair in their performances and songs, and continue pushing the envelope with each new musical evolution.
The LP and a follow-up “repackaged” version of the album were announced last month by NCT 127’s label, SM Entertainment. On Wednesday, the band members said it will arrive in September during their anniversary “Office: Foundation Day” fan meet.


NCT 127 were relatively tight-lipped when it came to details of the album, but did reveal that it has a three-letter English-language title, ending in the letter “r”.
Ahead of this month’s anniversary, the band released a single called Save in June.


Throughout their career, NCT 127 have made a name for themselves as the primary internationally focused group formed from SM Entertainment’s larger boy band project NCT, or “Neo Culture Technology”.
Other iterations of NCT include the mainly South Korea-based NCT Dream, and the China-focused WayV, which NCT 127’s sole Chinese member, WinWin, has since become part of).


By issuing music in Korean, Japanese and English, and members hailing from South Korea, the US, Canada and Japan, they’ve gained fans across the world, and regularly toured and performed internationally before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Last year’s Neo Zone, the group’s second studio album, even managed to break into the Top 5 of the US Billboard 200 albums chart.
That album’s first single, Kick It, went on to be a huge viral hit, thank to its dynamic choreography and chorus referencing Bruce Lee.

NCT 127 have also become known as the leaders of the “noise music” trend among K-pop artists, putting out songs that are as addictive as they are chaotic, such as 2017’s Cherry Bomb and 2018’s Simon Says.
They’ve also shown their more melodic side on singles like 2017’s severely underrated Limitless and 2018’s sugary sweet Touch, and their albums cover a wide range of genres while being rooted firmly in exuberant hip-hop, energetic electropop dance, and evocative R&B sounds.
Like all great pop acts, their music is global in its lyricism, with songs like the anthem Regular tapping into themes like motivation and success, while the sentimental End to Start reflectively explores life’s changes, when one ending is really just the beginning of something.


And, of course, they have love songs galore – their latest album, February’s Japanese EP Loveholic, was built upon the theme.
During the fan-meet, the nine members of NCT 127 – Taeyong, Mark, Doyoung, Johnny, Yuta, Taeil, Haechan, Jungwoo, and Jaehyun – not only talked about the new album and their hopes for it, but also reflected on their career thus far, played a variety of games, and performed six songs, including the first live performance of 2020’s Music, Dance.


“From today onwards it somehow feels like an engine is revving up again,” said Johnny, reflecting on the event as kick-starting a new cycle of album releases.
“From now until the last day of this year, we’ll once again run with CZnies,” he added, referring to the nickname for the band’s fandom, NCTzen.
