This week’s announcement by LG Electronics that it was leaving the smartphone business was not exactly a shocker – LG’s mobile division had been haemorrhaging money for the past several years and for months, there were rumours of its shuttering. 

The division is expected to be wound down by July 31.

But while most of LG’s recent releases have been underwhelming, it wasn’t always this way. In fact, Android enthusiasts will remember LG as a pioneer of many mobile trends, and a company that was willing to think outside the box and try new, weird things. 

And so in the wake of LG mobile’s demise, here’s a fond look back at five of the most important LG smartphones – for both good and bad.
