LG is no stranger to quirky-looking handsets – and its latest, Wing, is one of the South Korean electronics giant’s weirdest releases yet.
This is a smartphone with two screens, but instead of being connected side-by-side like some of LG’s previous models, one screen sits directly on top of the other, covering it entirely most of the time and resembling a typical slab smartphone.
A push in a certain spot of the top layer screen will have it swivelling, locking into a T-shape. Now the second screen is visible on the lower part of the device, while the main screen sits sideways in landscape orientation. The swivel action is smooth and locks with a satisfying click. LG says it’s tested the mechanism more than 200,000 times without failure.
This design brings two new uses a traditional smartphone cannot offer: the ability to run two apps at the same time; or have one app run with additional information on display, such as watching a YouTube video on the large landscape screen while being able to read comments on the smaller screen; or play a game with one of the screens serving as on-screen digital gamepad.


How useful these new features are depends on who you are. For me, who’s always doing work on the go and juggling multiple emails and word documents, having two screens improves my productivity. I can, for example, edit a document on Google Docs on one screen while fact-checking online on the other screen.
The device can be used in any orientation in T-shape, meaning the larger screen can be held vertically or horizontally, at top or bottom and the user interface adjusts accordingly.

Even if you have no need for such a quirky form factor, the Wing works well as a regular smartphone.
The construction is premium, with an attractive notch-less curved OLED 6.8-inch main screen and a glass back (with matt coating for better grip). The Wing is thicker and heavier than normal phones at 260g and 10.8mm, but still manageable in my opinion.
The specs and cameras are mid-tier but serviceable. The processor is a Snapdragon 765G (it’s a tier below the 865, but still supports 5G).

The main triple camera system consists of a 64-megapixel main lens, a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 12-megapixel “gimbal camera”. The latter is a similar system to the tech used in the Vivo X50 Pro, meaning the lens “floats” on a tiny support system with more range of motion than traditional camera modules.
The gimbal stabilisation does produce more fluid videos, and LG built a clever software UI in with the bottom small screen showing a gimbal joystick control. The sensor of the camera is not large enough, though, so footage needs a lot of sunlight to not look noisy.
The main camera is good, but a step behind the best cameras seen in Google or Huawei flagships in dynamic range. There’s a 32-megapixel pop-up selfie camera that gets the job done.

In terms of raw processing power and camera prowess, the Wing is not going to win any awards, but I am really enjoying its unique form factor and superior multitasking.
In a year of mostly glass sandwich phones that look similar, LG wins major points for trying something different. And unlike some of its previous experiments – remember the modular LG G5? – this one brings plenty of good with almost no compromises.
LG’s pricing on this should be quite competitive too. Final retail prices haven’t been announced, but it will be under US$800. There are, however, no plans for it to sell officially in Hong Kong, but Mong Kok phone resellers in Kowloon will have these in stock soon.

Weird, but worth it – that’s our first impression of the LG Wing which, at a push, turns into a T-shaped dual-screen phone with multiple possible uses
Its gimbal camera produces fluid videos, but footage shot in anything other than bright sunlight will be noisy; overall, LG deserves praise for being different



Multitaskers will love the LG Wing, a smartphone that deploys a second screen and becomes a T-shaped device, meaning it can multiple apps at the same time. Best of all, it doesn’t force the user into compromises to use both screens.
