This month, Hong Kong’s cafe scene welcomes the return of a decade-old favourite to its original neighbourhood, as well as new establishments in Sai Ying Pun and Tai Hang.
Several new openings blend concepts, including a coffee shop set up in a former pawn shop and a cafe collaboration with a cult car-tuning company from Japan.
Here are five new coffee shop openings to visit in Hong Kong this September.
1. How Dept

How Dept – which now has branches in Hysan Place, K11 Art Mall and other malls – started life as a furniture-showroom-cum-cafe hidden in an industrial building in Kwun Tong. Now, it returns with a new location on the same street it occupied a decade ago.
The ground-floor space at The Angle mall looks out over the bustling streets, while the upgraded menu includes snacks such as Sichuan spicy beef nachos and mains such as cheese egg rolls with dried sakura shrimp and salmon roe. There is also an extensive coffee selection.

2. Coffee Boats x Project House @ Chun On Pawn Shop

Coffee Boats was founded in late 2025 as a social enterprise supported by Caritas Hong Kong to empower youth and women from marginalised communities through work opportunities and training.
Its coffee beans are sourced directly from farmers and roasted by professionally trained women from Caritas Hong Kong’s Healthy Neighbourhood Kitchen Project.
Coffee Boats has held various small pop-ups and events across Hong Kong. Now, its most ambitious project yet sees it collaborating with charity One Bite Social to take over the historic Chun On Pawn Shop in Wan Chai.
The takeover runs until December 19, with 20 per cent of the revenue to be donated to Caritas Hong Kong, which has also trained young people to operate the cafe.

3. Brown Heart

A humble operation with a small menu, Brown Heart is the latest in a string of coffee shops to occupy its corner spot near Sai Ying Pun MTR in recent years.
The food is simple but bursting with flavour, with signature sandwiches including burrata; Parma ham and green grape with truffle balsamic glaze; and crabmeat and mentaiko with mascarpone cheese, basil and cheddar.
The matcha espresso latte is a good choice for those who cannot decide between coffee and matcha.

4. Pop Beans

An unusual coffee pit stop has landed inside the new Tai Hang store collaboration between cult Japanese car tuner Liberty Walk and Hong Kong model car brand Pop Race.
Pop Beans cafe offers motorheads a prime spot to refuel on caffeine while perusing the latest racing merch and custom builds.

5. Urban Coffee Roasters

The home-grown roastery has opened a second outlet in Central following its Hollywood Road location.
The IFC store features four branch-exclusive coffees, including a fruity single-origin Ethiopian bean with notes of passion fruit, blood orange and grape; and a Geisha blend with notes of flowers, honey and tangerine. The Geisha coffee is also crafted into a gelato for the perfect pairing.
To celebrate the new opening, guests who sign up as UCR members can get a free upgrade to the Geisha blend with any coffee purchase from August 28 to 30.
