How Argentina’s 2026 World Cup meltdowns over losing echo restaurant award tantrums
Just as Argentina suffered a sad case of sour grapes over losing to Spain, so too have restaurateurs and chefs been ungracious in defeat
Like many, I recently watched the Spain vs Argentina final of the Fifa World Cup 2026. For all that the former’s solid sense of teamwork shone through the 120-plus minutes, the game was ultimately blighted by some of the worst examples of sportsmanship (or lack thereof) from the Argentine squad.
Argentina’s lasting legacy from this particular season will be one defined by the petulance of Leandro Paredes’ man-child strop after the final whistle as he went for the throat of a Spanish player, and the entire team standing disrespectfully with their backs facing the winners on the podium.
In the hospitality world, tantrums and meltdowns are also aplenty, though they may not always happen in front of cameras beaming their antics to millions around the world. But sour grapes are most certainly a sadly common ingredient in the perceived high stakes of food competitions, world rankings and awards.
