I am grateful for them all. As writer Helen Rosner of the New Yorker magazine recently said: “Those of us in the admittedly absurd position of eating for a living come to learn, after some time on the job, that, on balance, most food tends to be pretty good.”

As I reflect on another year of great dishes, drinks and conversations, looking forward to the next batch of new restaurants makes me a little nervous for my digestive system.

As 2024 comes to an end, I am still mourning the loss of places like Vivant and their perfect little cornbreads, and this week we bid farewell to yet more beloved institutions, such as Hung Wan Cafe in Prince Edward, which closed on Christmas Day; more than ever, this is your sign to keep visiting your favourites in 2025 and beyond.
