How do you eat your eggs, wonton noodle soup or crisps? A survey reveals Hongkongers’ dining rituals
- A survey, carried out by YouGov on behalf of Deliveroo, sought to reveal the quirks of Hong Kong diners – including the group who eats crisps with chopsticks
- Also revealed was that the most popular way of adding vinegar to a bowl of wonton noodle soup was to add it directly to the broth

It has been said that Hongkongers are notoriously picky about food. A new survey carried out by polling agency YouGov on behalf of food delivery giant Deliveroo has revealed a few quirks about their dining habits.
The world has long been fascinated by the rituals of the dining table. Margaret Visser, the famed historian and anthropologist who dedicated her research and writings to the myths of everyday life, was known to eke out fascinating titbits on the topic.
First published in 1991 and reprinted in 2017, Visser’s tome The Rituals of Dinner was praised by food writer Bee Wilson as a “sharply wise book, one of the most important ever written about food, [that] outlines the manifold ways that humans complicate the act of eating”.

Visser was able to critically examine even the most mundane of food experiences, such as the “carefully observed ritual” of a McDonald’s meal, suggesting that dining rituals tell us a great deal about who we are.
