On the top floor of the L. Square building in Causeway Bay, Tristar Kitchen offers diners a choice of 11 Taiwanese noodle dishes, ranging from classic beef to the more lavish Jumbo Spicy Tristar noodles.

The decor and setting are minimalistic, with simple wooden tables and chairs, and tick-off menus. The view from the 21st floor (if you’re lucky enough to get a seat at one of the high tables facing the window) is of Wong Nai Chung Gap.

I was in the mood for a classic dish, so ordered the Taiwanese beef noodle soup (HK$75). The noodles come in three thicknesses, and I chose the middle one.

The order took about 10 minutes to arrive, and I appreciated the nicely designed bowls the food was served in – a change from the functional plastic ones so many other restaurants at this price point use.

The beef was tender and wasn’t too fatty, and the soup had a nice depth of flavour: you could taste onions and herbs that enriched the broth. The portions are not huge, but definitely enough for a light meal.
