Somewhere along the line, dressing for fun became an outdated notion. These days we have dressing to impress, dressing for success, dressing for Instagram – but social metrics and instant feedback mean that you’re that much less likely to dress for yourself, just because.
Yet the style stars who make it big on Instagram are those who dress first and foremost for themselves, not caring about curating their feed or keeping to a consistent colour palette.
Haida Yusof-Yeomans, Malaysian stylist and fashion chameleon, definitely dresses for herself. One quick glance at her feed @haidayusof and you’ll see a joyful clash of colours, textures, cultures and references. Sometimes her outfits are tailored to her surroundings – a playful tartan-on-tartan combo for a road trip around Scotland; other times, they’re wilfully inappropriate – a full-on suit in the glare of the Dubai sun.
Yusof-Yeomans embraces trends with abandon, willing to try anything once – neon trousers, leather shirts, ’80s shell suit? Done, done and done.
“My style is ever-changing, experimental with an edge,” Yusof-Yeomans says. “I can’t really give it a description because I’m always trying out different looks, but I’m currently very much into trend clashing.
