ReviewA Mighty Adventure movie review: wordless animation by McDull director is breezy if flawed
Hong Kong director Toe Yuen’s film about insects surviving the city is a visual marvel, though dialogue would have made it more expressive

3/5 stars
A few idyllic opening minutes set in the countryside introduce the protagonists: a young grasshopper that can’t quite jump like the rest of its family; a butterfly that sprinkles stardust and instantly bewitches the grasshopper; and a bubbly little spider that, perhaps traumatised by its mother’s table manners, yearns to befriend the other two.
Once the three are whisked off to a science-minded family’s high-rise apartment, the film becomes a visual marvel – seamlessly blending computer-generated, largely naturalistic insects (by Malaysian animators) with live-action footage (meticulously shot in Taiwan) – as it navigates miniature traps presented by the most mundane aspects of city living.
