This is the 79th instalment in a biweekly series profiling major Hong Kong pop culture figures of recent decades.
“Are Hongkongers forgetful? Not when there’s a scandal,” Andy Hui Chi-on told HK Magazine in 2006. It was a casual, tongue-in-cheek observation at the time, but the Hong Kong pop singer could not have known that those words would come to define the darkest chapter of his life 13 years later.
With a career spanning four decades, 58-year-old Hui has survived the entire spectrum of celebrity: from the whirlwind heights of Cantopop stardom to the crushing weight of public scrutiny, and a gruelling journey towards redemption following his 2019 infidelity scandal.
Today, he remains a complex figure undeniably woven into Hong Kong’s pop culture history.
A slow rise to stardom
Born to a Chinese father and a Vietnamese mother, Hui was the youngest of 10 siblings. His journey into the entertainment industry began in 1986, at age 19, when he entered the New Talent Singing Awards. Though he placed second, his distinctive, husky voice caught the ears of executives at Hong Kong record label Capital Artists, who swiftly signed him.

Crucially, Cantopop icon Anita Mui Yim-fong noticed his talent and took him under her wing. Mui featured him on her hit track “Break the Iceberg”, which helped launch him into the mainstream. Over the years, Hui has credited Mui with teaching him that musical talent lies in conveying emotion rather than hitting high notes.
Despite Mui’s backing, solo stardom eluded Hui for some time. His 1988 self-titled debut album and subsequent releases received lukewarm responses, nearly costing him his recording contract.
His fortunes turned with his fifth album, Break and Reform Collection (1991). His slow rise was further solidified by the 1996 hit song “Man Is The Most Painful”, which became an immediate karaoke staple across Asia and put him at the top of the charts.
While artists such as Taiwanese singer Jay Chou were revolutionising the music scene with R&B in the early 2000s, Hui doubled down on traditional, sweeping melodic structures. He became the king of the heartbreak ballad, carving out a distinct niche by expressing emotional vulnerability and deep melancholy with his soulful voice.


Beyond music, he began exploring film opportunities, making his screen debut in 1992 in Girls Without Tomorrow 1992. Although he was never known for his acting, Hui appeared in several notable films, such as Wong Jing’s sci-fi comedy Future Cops (1993) and the art-house drama Swallowtail Butterfly (1996) by Japanese director Shunji Iwai.
Hong Kong’s last fairy tale
His rise culminated at the 2001 Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Awards Presentation, when he won the most popular male singer award. Yet it is impossible to discuss Hui without mentioning his now-wife, superstar singer Sammi Cheng Sau-man, whom he began dating on and off in 1991.
Accepting his award, he delivered his famous tearful “Kitchen Manifesto” speech, thanking Cheng – who won the most popular female singer award earlier that evening – and recalling a conversation in her kitchen where they dreamed of winning the top prizes together.
This declaration redefined his career as a journey deeply tied to their romantic union, which many described as “Hong Kong’s last fairy tale”. Through break-ups, rumours and a brief relationship with his then-assistant, Hui and Cheng’s eventual, unpublicised marriage around 2014 felt like a rare victory for true love in the cynical showbiz industry.
Following the speech, his career continued to soar. In 2004, veteran singer Alan Tam Wing-lun crowned Hui, Leo Ku Kui-kei, Edmond Leung Hon-man and Hacken Lee Hak-kan the “New Four Heavenly Kings”, positioning them as successors to 1990s Cantopop legends like Jacky Cheung Hok-yau and Andy Lau Tak-wah.
In 2009, Hui reached another milestone by forming the Cantopop supergroup Big Four with Edmond Leung, Dicky Cheung Wai-kin and William So Wing-hong, hosting highly successful concerts together from 2010.

A shattering halt
By the mid-2010s, Hui’s legacy was secured, and his marriage was iconic. But the fairy tale came to a shattering halt in April 2019, when he was caught in a highly publicised infidelity scandal with former TVB actress Jacqueline Wong Sum-wing.
Intimate footage of the two from a vehicle dashcam was leaked to the now-defunct news site Apple Daily, shaking the entertainment industry and threatening to erase his more than 30 years of artistic achievements.
Hui held a tearful, live-broadcast press conference within hours of the news breaking. Bowing deeply, he said, “I would like to say it from the bottom of my heart to everybody that I am sorry. My deep apologies to my family, my friends and those who love me. I have done something irreparable and unforgivable … I am sorry, Sammi.”
Then came the most quotable part of his apology: “At this moment I am a person without soul. I am a rotten person.”

A concert planned for that September was swiftly cancelled, alongside bookings in mainland China. Amid a storm of internet memes, the scandal was so pervasive that it even prompted legislative debates regarding privacy laws and recording devices in public transport.
Hui spent years away from the spotlight, retreating into privacy to repair his marriage. However, he was shielded from total career destruction by Cheng’s public grace. Just two days after the scandal broke, she posted a statement quoting a Bible verse, calling the infidelity “an important shared lesson in our marriage” and declaring her commitment to moving forward together.
He would later refer to this period as a “scarring incident”, admitting he genuinely doubted he would ever be allowed back on a stage.
The road to redemption
Hui returned to the Hong Kong stage in 2021, with Cheng even suggesting songs for his performances. He signed with Universal Music in 2022 and released the poignant track “Between People”, which meditated on the complexities of life, human mistakes and connection.
This journey towards redemption progressed with major milestones over the next few years, culminating in a surprise concert appearance at Cheng’s You & Mi World Tour at the Hong Kong Coliseum in July 2024.


Emerging to play the piano and sing a duet of his hit “Fireworks at the End of the Century” alongside his wife, the moment marked their first major public appearance together since the scandal and served as a powerful symbol of their marital recovery.
In 2025, Big Four reunited for an emotional tour celebrating decades of friendship. This was closely followed by Hui’s April 2026 single, “The Albatross”, a track that carries deep parallels to his career, as the metaphorical bird symbolises an inescapable psychological burden.
Hui will hold three solo performances at the Hong Kong Coliseum this October to mark his 40th year in show business.
“For this rare solo performance, I will make the most out of this opportunity,” Hui told the entertainment news channel Viu1 HK in May 2026. “The number of shows really doesn’t matter to me; what’s most important is the reputation and confidence, and that people walk away full of memories.”
Today, seven years removed from the cheating scandal that nearly dismantled his life’s work, Hui’s enduring presence proves that fame is indeed fragile. Yet it also serves as a poignant reminder that a legacy can survive its darkest chapters, provided there is a genuine commitment to contrition and repair.
