This is the 69th instalment in a biweekly series profiling major Hong Kong pop culture figures of recent decades.
Between 2024 and 2025, Hins Cheung King-hin performed a record 31 shows across two concert series at The Londoner Arena in Macau. The feat not only broke his personal best but also set a new benchmark for the most concerts by an artist within a year in the city.
That is just another piece of trivia about Cheung, who has emerged as both a cultural custodian and a bridge between the golden era of Cantopop and its digital-first future.
Born in 1981 in Guangzhou, in China’s Guangdong province, Cheung was raised by parents who initially nudged him towards a career in accounting, a practical path that seemed worlds away from the stardom of the 2000s boy next door.


“We have a family history of depression and I was always an introvert growing up,” he recalled in a 2008 interview with the SCMP.
Cheung attributes his musical talent to his family. He was taught singing by his father, who played an eclectic range of instruments, while his paternal step-grandfather was a master percussionist in the Guangdong Peking opera scene who often took him to watch performances.
Cheung hoped to attend art school to pursue his passion, but because of poor academic grades and his family’s advice, he enrolled in a vocational accounting school in Guangzhou instead.
Unbeknown to his mother, however, he refused to let the dream die. He worked at smoky bars in Shenzhen, spending his nights singing for meagre pay. Matters worsened when, at age 17, he unknowingly signed a fake record deal that cheated him out of tens of thousands of dollars.

Despite these setbacks, he persisted. Cheung then found a job working in a small studio in Guangzhou, dubbing commercials and singing for soundalike karaoke videos in which he imitated renowned Hong Kong artists, including William So Wing-hong and Daniel Chan Hiu-tung.
Cheung’s supportive employer lacked the funds to promote him, but he was allowed to use the recording equipment after work. Moved by his commitment, his mother staked 50,000 yuan on a final gamble: succeed as a singer, or retreat to accounting.
In 2000, he released his debut solo single “Too Far”, which became a local radio hit. A year later, with the blessings of his mother and his boss, he managed to create his first EP in the studio, titled Hins’ First. A second edition of the EP was also released in 2001, selling 20,000 copies in Guangdong and its neighbouring areas.
Yet, the path to stability remained treacherous. Even after these early milestones, Cheung continued to perform in mainland nightclubs to make ends meet, a period that took a severe toll on his mental health.

In the 2008 interview with the SCMP, Cheung revealed that his depression hit its lowest point in 2002.
“People [in the nightclubs] often got drunk and yelled at each other. I even had a gun pointed at my head a few times. I was so lost then,” he said. “I thought my career would be like this forever. The more I thought about it, the more depressed I became.”
Salvation came just in time. On October 15, 2002, Universal Music Hong Kong called with an offer Cheung initially mistook for a prank. He decided to take the leap, reasoning he could always return to Guangzhou if he failed. As he told Prestige Hong Kong magazine in 2023, “All the milestones I’ve hit since then all trace to that day.”
These include 12 studio albums and five EPs – not including re-releases and various regional versions – throughout a career spanning more than two decades.
His first studio album released in Hong Kong was Hins My Way (2003), originally issued in mainland China the year before as My Way. Cheung oversaw every detail, from writing and arranging to producing and singing. The final product, featuring 15 songs, was a reflection of his individual artistry.

In 2007, the release of My 1st Collection, which also featured highlights from My Way, went on to become the only album of 2008 to achieve double platinum status, as certified by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) Hong Kong.
Soon after, Cheung released “Under the Cherry Blossom Tree”, which became one of his most iconic songs and was one of the winners in the 2008 RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards. Its sequel, “Centenary Tree”, won Song of the Year at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards a decade later.
“I don’t just want to have fun for a few years and then vanish completely; I want to be a long-lasting, evergreen artist,” Cheung told the SCMP in 2014, revealing that his constant metamorphosis is a matter of strategy.
He has long shielded his private life from public view, prioritising his career over romantic entanglements. Even when facing persistent tabloid speculation regarding his close bond with singer Kenny Kwan Chi-bun, he has consistently steered the conversation back to his work.

With every release, Cheung adapted to the shifting tides of the industry. He skilfully navigated everything from R&B-inspired rhythms to poignant, melancholic ballads.
Alongside his singing career, Cheung expanded his artistry into theatre. Having taken part in a few Cantonese musicals as a singer, he made his debut as a stage actor in the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s I Have a Date with Autumn in 2012.
Furthermore, in 2014, he starred as a troubled teenager in the Cantonese adaptation of the psychosexual play Equus, a role that required him to perform a nude scene. Cheung’s performance received widespread acclaim.
On the silver screen, his credits range from a small role in the 2004 Lunar New Year comedy In-Laws, Out-Laws to a leading role opposite close friend Ivana Wong Yuen-chi in the 2023 comedy Everything Under Control.

Cheung has always regarded his 2008 Hong Kong Coliseum debut as the catalyst for settling permanently in the city, a transition solidified the day he received his Hong Kong ID card.
“I turned around and teared up,” he told Vogue in 2024 regarding the moment his residency became official.
Now a Hong Kong icon, he is determined to help the arts flourish in his adopted home.
Cheung served as the arts and culture ambassador for the First Initiative Foundation (FIF), a Hong Kong charity promoting arts and education. In late 2025, he launched “Hins Academy”, a series of lectures covering vocal technique, melody composition and the craft of live performance.
Today, Cheung, who turns 45 on February 1, acts as a cultural preserver of Hong Kong arts and heritage buildings, while continuing to sell out stadiums.

Most notably, he invested heavily to acquire and save Hong Kong’s legendary Avon Recording Studios – the hallowed ground where icons such as Anita Mui Yim-fong and Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing once recorded – protecting a vital piece of Cantopop history from closure.
This dedication is also evident in how he meticulously refurbished the Old Alberose, a 1926-built mansion in Hong Kong’s Pok Fu Lam neighbourhood, during his time living there.
For Cheung, this relentless drive – to sing, to act, to preserve – is ultimately an expression of gratitude. It is a philosophy grounded in the memory of the boy in the Shenzhen bar who once had no options left.
“Many people are afraid to dream big because they do not want to be disappointed,” he reflected in 2023. “Back then, I avoided failure by simply not trying. But I really want to thank my parents – especially my mother, who was an orphan herself – they taught me I had nothing to lose.”
