Hong Kong Asian Film Festival 2025: 12 of the best movies to see, including Another World

Highlights of the 22nd HKAFF include local film Another World, Japanese period epic Kokuho and South Korea’s The World of Love

Boasting an eclectic programme of features, shorts, documentaries and retrospectives, the 22nd Hong Kong Asian Film Festival (HKAFF) opens its doors on October 22 with the Asian premiere of new Hong Kong animation Another World.

Other local debuts include esports fantasy Gamer Girls, starring the increasingly ubiquitous Angela Yuen Lai-lam, and the Canada-set drama Finch & Midland, featuring Anthony Wong Chau-sang and Patrick Tam Yiu-man.

Thai filmmaker Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit is this year’s director in focus, with a number of his films screening, including 2013’s Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy; 2019’s Happy Old Year; and his newest feature, Human Resource, fresh from its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

The HKAFF also includes a selection of features adapted from the work of manga artist Yoshiharu Tsuge, most notably this year’s Two Seasons, Two Strangers from director Sho Miyake.

While the following selections barely scratch the surface of what is on offer, here are our picks for 12 of the best films screening at this year’s edition.

1. Another World

Opening the festival this year is Tommy Ng Kai-chung’s animated fantasy, adapted from Naka Saijo’s Japanese novel Sennenki: Thousand-Year Journey of an Oni.
