Beyoncé won the Grammy for album of the year for the first time in her long career at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
Kendrick Lamar won Grammys for song of the year and record of the year for “Not Like Us”, while Chappell Roan took best new artist.
Beyoncé was presented with the top award for her album Cowboy Carter by Los Angeles County firefighters, and on reaching the stage to accept it, the singer said: “I’d like to thank and acknowledge all of the firefighters for keeping us safe.
Los Angeles is still reeling from wildfires that claimed 29 lives and devastated neighbourhoods including Pacific Palisades and Altadena.
I just want to say tonight trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love.

The award is the 43-year-old superstar’s first album of the year Grammy out of a record 35 she has won. “I feel very full and honoured,” she said. “It’s been many, many years.”
Kendrick Lamar, who next weekend will headline the Super Bowl halftime show, snagged the two big awards handed out before album of the year.

“We gonna dedicate this one to the city,” Lamar said in accepting record of the year for the song “Not Like Us”, “Most importantly, the people and the families in the Palisades and out in Altadena.”
“This is a true testament that we can continue to restore the city.”
“Not Like Us” also won best the rap song and best rap performance awards.

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, who performed the Mamas & the Papas hit “California Dreamin’”, won best pop duo/group performance for “Die With a Smile”, a 2024 single that will appear on Gaga’s upcoming album Mayhem.
“It is a privilege to be a songwriter and a producer and musician,” Lady Gaga said before shifting to make a point about human rights.
“I just want to say tonight trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love.”

Alicia Keys was presented with the Dr Dre Global Impact Award, an honour for activities in music and the world outside, and after noting how few women music producers are well-known or recipients of honours such as the Grammys, gave a stirring speech in support of diversity, an ideal that has come under assault in the political world beyond the Grammys.
“This is for all the ladies that know the magic that they bring to the room,” Keys said. “This is not the time to shut down the diversity of voices. We’ve seen on this stage talented, hard-working people from different backgrounds with different points of view, and it changes the game.
“DEI is not a threat it’s a gift,” Keys said in reference to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts the new Trump administration in the United States is seeking to end, “And the more voices, the more powerful the sound.
“When destructive voices try to burn us down we rise from the ashes like a phoenix. And you as you see tonight, music is the unstoppable language,” she added.
On a similar note Shakira, in her acceptance speech after winning best Latin pop album, said: “I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country. You are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you.”

Roan nudged aside Sabrina Carpenter to win the Grammy for best new artist, capping a remarkably explosive rise to fame for an artist dropped by her last record label.
The singer, emotional after receiving her first Grammy, took the stage sporting her signature drag-inspired make-up.
“I told myself that if I ever got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists offer a liveable wage,” Roan said.

She expressed her own experience as a minor that was signed by a record label and eventually dropped from that contract, leaving her unable to afford health insurance.
“We (music artists) got you, but do you got us?” she added.
Carpenter won the 2025 Grammy for best pop vocal album for Short n’ Sweet, one of the first honours handed out at the annual ceremony to present the highest accolades in the music business.

Her win came minutes after she performed hits “Please Please Please” and “Espresso” on the Grammys stage. “This is my first Grammy so I’m going to cry,” the singer said as she accepted the trophy.
Among awards handed out before the televised segment of the ceremony began, Hans Zimmer won best soundtrack for the film Dune: Part II.
Cowboy Carter, which also won the Grammy for best country album, was viewed by experts and fans as a reclamation and homage to an overlooked legacy of black Americans within country music and culture.

It became the first album by a black woman to land at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart when it was released last spring. The album was snubbed, however, by voters for the Country Music Awards in September.
The Cowboy Carter nomination was Beyoncé’s fifth entry in the album of the year category. Swift has won the honour a record four times, including last year for Midnights.
Meanwhile, “Not Like Us” is the second hip-hop single to ever win in the category. The first was Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”.
In winning song of the year, Lamar not only beat Beyoncé for single “Texas Hold ’Em”, but Billie Eilish for “Birds of a Feather”, Sabrina Carpenter for “Please Please Please” and Roan for “Good Luck, Babe!”
