Macau can boast another show that is electrifying visitors in between gambling, shopping and eating. Following the decade-long success of House of Dancing Water at the City of Dreams complex, Elekron was launched in January in Studio City, featuring electric vehicles doing stunts in an indoor arena – considered a world first.

In stark contrast to House of Dancing Water, which is a love story featuring water, Elekron is set in the desert in a post-apocalyptic world where Mad Max-like tribes have to work together to find electric power for survival.

The show is geared towards car fanatics, with the bonus that this eclectic bunch of vehicles are fitted with Tesla motors, making them pollution-free for indoors. Sports cars, buggies, quad bikes and motorbikes must navigate a space smaller than an Olympic-sized swimming pool in a tightly choreographed 75-minute show that includes jumping off ramps and driving up and down the 12-metre high main wall that has a steep 60-degree incline.

In addition to the two- and four-wheeled stunts, there are female aerialists suspended from the ceiling, guys who perform parkour with the vehicles and a pair of clowns thrown into the mix.

Taiwanese-born Pei-Jun Lee is the resident director of Elekron, and manages some 150 people, from drivers and aerialists, to backstage crew and stage managers to ensure they all work together seamlessly. Safety is her biggest concern.
