Are your loved ones in luck this year? See our predictions for all the zodiac signs in the Year of the Horse.
In Chinese culture, the custom of picking auspicious days for significant events is called zaak jat in Cantonese and ze ji in Mandarin, and picking the right date and time to return to work after the Lunar New Year holiday is a good example of this traditional practice.
The Spring Festival break has historically lasted a couple of weeks, but these days it is not uncommon for businesses to open and workers to return after a three-day break, as seen in Hong Kong. In 2026, the fourth day of the first month of the Year of the Fire Horse falls on a Friday, but is it the best day to report back to work?
According to Hong Kong feng shui master Li Kui-ming, February 20 is an auspicious day to go back to work, ushering in a smooth and successful year ahead.
The best time to start the working day is 7am to 9am, the next best is 11am to 1pm. However, this is not a good day for those born in the Year of the Sheep to return to work. Luckily, there are other options for them.

The consensus among feng shui masters is that February 25, March 3 and March 5 are, in fact, the best days to boot up the work computer to call business clients.
Favourable times to do that are 7am to 3pm and 5pm to 7pm on February 25, 9am to 11am, 1pm to 3pm and 5pm to 11pm on March 3, and 5am to 3pm and 5pm to 11pm on March 5.
Avoid returning to work on the seventh day of the new year if possible, Li says, as it falls on February 23 this year – a day that clashes with the tai sui.
The custom of ze ji has existed for more than 2,000 years, and the practice had become prevalent in Chinese culture by the time of the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. An auspicious day would be chosen for anything from conducting religious sacrifices and prayers to taking exams, arranging weddings or funerals, and building houses.
In Chinese astrology, the shen sha method determines a day’s fortunes and challenges.
This is done by calculating which of the six “Yellow Path” spirits and the six “Black Path” spirits are “on duty” on that day. In practice, people strive to select “Yellow Path” days for important activities, while avoiding “Black Path” days.

When an auspicious spirit governs the day, it is known as huang dao ji ri in Mandarin, and it is traditionally considered suitable for starting all kinds of activities. February 25, March 3 and March 5 – the days thought to be good for going back to work – are considered as such.
It is worth noting that, just as February 20 is not lucky for those born in the Year of the Sheep, February 25 is not lucky for those born in the Year of the Rat, March 3 is not good for Horses, and March 5 is not auspicious for those born in the Year of the Monkey. Be sure to choose a day that does not clash with your Chinese zodiac sign.
Many Chinese companies perform worship rituals on the first working day of the Lunar New Year. They typically prepare five fa gao cakes to represent prosperity, four bowls of tangyuan (tong yuen in Cantonese) – sweet glutinous rice dumplings – to symbolise reunion, three types of auspicious fruits, three cups of tea or wine and a pair of candles in the hopes of cultivating prosperity.
On that day, employers often prepare money-filled red envelopes for their employees to spread prosperity and good luck for the new working year.
