In 2026, Lunar New Year’s Day will fall on February 17, marking the end of the Year of the Wood Snake and the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse.
To get an idea of how “fiery” this year could be, consider the following Chinese astrological calculations and feng shui readings.
In Chinese astrology, each year is associated with one of the 12 zodiac animals paired with one of the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire or earth. These elements complement and clash with one another, and it is this interplay that is believed to promote harmony, balance and order in the natural world.

The fact that there are five elements and 12 zodiac signs dictates that any given combination occurs every 60 years. The last Year of the Fire Horse, for example, was 1966. The last Year of the Horse, in 2014, was the Year of the Wood Horse; 2002 was the Year of the Water Horse; 1990 was the Year of the Metal Horse, and 1978 was the Year of the Earth Horse.
The Chinese lunisolar calendar is based on the 60-year, or sexagenary, cycle of ganzhi, which literally means “stems and branches” in Chinese. It is one of the oldest ways of recording time.
“The ganzhi year denotation has been used for more than 2,000 years,” writes scientific officer Hui Tai-wai on the Hong Kong Observatory’s website. “Although it attracts less interest in modern society, it still generates a lot of attention and discussion in the Chinese community around the time of Chinese New Year.”
The ganzhi cycle is partially made up of 10 “heavenly stems” (or phases) that are linked to the five elements as well as to two energetic qualities: yin and yang. The system is said to create a metaphysical framework for understanding time, energy and cosmic balance.
In 2026, the heavenly stem moves to a phase called bing, which is associated with yang, or masculine energy and fire. Since the fundamental element of the horse sign – or its affiliated “earthly branch” wu – is also fire, the Year of the Fire Horse is of “double fire”, representing drastic change and transformation.
Furthermore, according to feng shui, we are now in what is known as “Period 9”, the final 20-year phase of a 180-year elemental energy cycle. “Period 9” is linked to – yes, you guessed it – fire. This period, which runs from 2024 to 2043, signifies both destruction and creation.
In Chinese culture, fire is represented by the colour red, so the coming year is also being referred to as the Year of the Red Horse.
It will be followed by the Year of the Fire or Red Sheep in 2027, and these two consecutive “red” years – which come around every 60 years and are known among the superstitious as the “Red Horse and Red Sheep Calamity” – are expected to bring much disruption or even warfare.
In 1966, the last Year of the Fire Horse, the Cultural Revolution plunged China into a decade of chaos and violence. The following year, riots broke out in Hong Kong.

Sixty years before that, in 1906, the United States suffered its deadliest earthquake. Striking San Francisco with a magnitude of 7.9, it resulted in more than 3,000 deaths.
However, the Year of the Fire Horse is also associated with groundbreaking progress.
The Soviet Union landed its uncrewed spacecraft Luna 9 on the moon in 1966, the same year that the US completed its Gemini space programme, which developed technologies and techniques important for space travel.
The Chinese zodiac comprises 12 animal signs in a fixed order: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
What of those born in the Year of the Fire Horse? In Chinese culture, fire is a symbol of light and warmth, while the horse represents intelligence, courage and diligence.
Fire horses are said to be strong-willed, proactive and lively. They are confident and enthusiastic at work and are capable of handling various problems simultaneously. These live wires thrive on challenges and succeed in the face of adversity.
The Year of the Fire Horse is expected to be full of breakthroughs, innovations and rapid changes – many fortune-tellers are already predicting big technological advances, in particular in the fields of artificial intelligence and medicine.
People are encouraged to chase their dreams in the coming year, as it will present many golden opportunities.
England won the football World Cup as the host nation in 1966, defeating West Germany in the final. It remains the country’s only World Cup victory, and is widely regarded as one of its greatest sporting achievements.

Curiously, one major international event next year is believed to be able to counter the impact of the “Red Horse and Red Sheep Calamity” – the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
According to the Chinese “Five Elements Theory”, while fire can melt metal, metal can collect water, which puts out fire.
With their smooth, round surfaces, spherical objects – such as footballs – are associated with the metal element. Because of this, and the shape’s associations with perfection and unity, feng shui masters believe the global sport spectacle could take some of the heat out of the “double fire”.
