Emerging Choreographers - 2012: The Beginning or the End? 

Hong Kong Ballet 

The Mayan prophecy - which predicts the world will come to an end on December 21  - has inspired the latest collaboration between the Hong Kong Ballet and the Hong Kong Dance Company.
Presenting seven interpretations  of the prediction, the show is part of the Ballet's annual emerging choreographers' workshop, which promotes the creative talents of young dancers within and, for the first time,  outside  the company.

pas de deux piece 
Unable to Rewind tells  of two lovers torn by their different directions in life: one for the present, the other for the future.

"Everybody has a different interpretation of the phenomenon. I want to illustrate it through an intimate relationship of two people living in  different stages of mind. The woman can see the future beyond now but not the man. Will they still be together?" says Li, who also composed the music.   He plays  with the contrasting movements and emotions between  the two roles, performed by  principal Jin Yao  and soloist Wei Wei.  
This is the first time  Hong Kong Ballet has collaborated with another dance company in its workshop, which began in 1984. Xie Yin,  artistic coordinator and instructor of the Dance Company's youth troupe, is excited about this joint effort. 
"It's great to have the chance to work with other passionate dancers in the field.  I'm thrilled to see my concept being interpreted  by a ballet dancer," says Xie who  is trained in Chinese dance. Her piece 
Lotus Flower, to be performed by Jin,  drawing from the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The  tragedy still resonates with her and coincides with the 2012 theme. "When I thought about the theme, I saw a lotus flower coming out of life in three stages: below the ground, in the water and above in the air."

 Other choreographers  in the programme are Yuh Egami,  Ricky Hu,  Li Yi-ran,  Liu  Miao-miao,  Jonathan Spigner  and Liu Yinghong.
