Google searches in Hong Kong this year have been dominated by the anti-government protests that have rocked the city for more than six months, according to data released by the internet giant.

The company announced its most searched terms of 2019 last week, with results for overall searches as well as categories for public figures and news (split locally and internationally), and movies.

Hong Kong internet forum LIHKG, popular with protesters and their supporters, topped the overall list and the ranking for local news.
Outspoken anti-protest lawmaker Junius Ho Kwan-yiu, who became a hate figure among the protest movement after appearing to shake hands with alleged perpetrators involved in the Yuen Long MTR station attack on July 21, was the most searched local public figure. Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, head of Hong Kong’s government, came second in that category.

On a lighter note, sci-fi films based on comic books dominated the movies list. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame generated the most searches, while the company’s Captain Marvel took third place. DC Comics’ Joker ranked second.
